Howdy folks, Had some around the shop chores yesterday so I ran the saw while I was working. Cut some of my Texas wood. Here are a few pics....Mel This one was till in the vice so I may have posted pics of some of this hunk before. This is palm wood that was partly decomposed and then agate replaced. Lots of little dots seem suspended in the yellowish agate. Have a buddy back in California who wanted some Texas palm so I cut some slabs off this beauty. This is some of the nicest palm fiber I've cut yet. Kind of junky wood without a lot of color or pattern. Will probably throw these in the tumbler for the kids. Don't show well in the pic but this had tiny dots throughout. No clue what the heck kind of wood it is; From the exterior this one appeared to be palm of some sort but has turned into odd shrinkwood with no palm fiber pattern inside.

shrinkwood is interesting. is that a type of wood or a type of replacement process?

Interesting stuff throughout, could easily imagine using them for simple carved cabs.

Daniel: Yep it's a common name for a brecciated wood created when pet wood is fractured and resealed kind of like the process forming Stone Canyon Jasper. Seems to occur quite a lot in pet wood from the George West region of Texas and much of the wood is palm fiber before the fracturing. Too many other wood types are unidentified though. Some of the wood may have been partly rotted or cracked up even before being mineralized but it's difficult to tell what came first. The most beautiful is hexagonally fractured and if you Google Hexagonally fractured petrified wood there are a couple of interesting articles with pics which make an interesting read......Mel

Mel,
That one with the "tiny dots throughout" -- what do you mean by that? Now you of all people know wood, and Texas and Minnesota aren't neighbors, so I mention this only because of the odd similarity. I found a piece (here in Minnesota) that was similar in color and had bands like your picture. Upon closer inspection though I realized it was agatized oolite, not wood. There was no grain, or I should say it looked like it was all end grain from every angle. Under magnification though it was very obviously oolite. Exact same color, at the scale of the picture it sure looks the same, just a coincidence I'm sure.

Daniel: Yep, probably just similar patterns. This stuff definitely has wood bark- like exterior patterns when rough and the pattern is fibrous striations when looked at from the other angle. As with most palm ( monocot) type woods, the dots only appear when you cut perpendicular to the long section of the trunks, stems or roots......Mel
