After going back to the pictures I see what Don meant about the spring release. Very strange drive system. Lots of rocks make colorful sludge not just bricks.

Hey John, best I can figure the spring and collar serve one of two purposes. Either it's a spring release for vice return, or else the spring holds tension on the worm gear to keep it aligned with the worm drive shaft. Either way, it's a strange and interesting machine. I'd sure like to get a close look at it.

The spring may be for tension for the feed rate or serve as a sort of lock or shock for the carrige ?

I have my suspicions that "joe53" is dougy aka all the others - that poppy jasper he posted that he "found on the beach" is just like what dougy was selling and you really don't see that type of material on washington beaches
