I had a lot of trouble getting pics of this rough because the stone is so dark I had to slice it pretty thin to get good views of the flames. The 2mm slices shows red flames with black tips. The 3mm seems to have flames in foreground and background and sky is not so clear. The 4mm is starting to lose the distinct flame pattern because the lower layers of flames darken things too much. 2 mm 3 mm 4 mm But the 2mm is pretty thin. I am thinking about putting clear quartz cap on top. Any other suggestions? Here is the rough pic:

Oh I loved it since I 1st saw it, and the hefty price tag only made me select smaller pieces. But if the doublet does not work, it might end up as a sconce or wind chime. I hope the quartz doublet works. I might even put quartz on both side for a double domed pendant. Will see.

Daniel: I would certainly put a quartz cap on the 2mm, and if not a quartz backing, maybe white. I went down to 2 mm on some Cady moss for the same reason you did the flame. Is this flame from South west Utah? We tried to get to that site last year but it was wet. It sure looks like it was worth a good price, too. Woody

I second what Woody is saying. A triplet with white backing would seem best. Jo

What a difference between 2 and 3 mm! Surely worth to cover it with some clear quartz.

I have lots of little beautiful plumes that I am going to thin cut and turn into triplets for some and doublets for others.

I went by Brian's warehouse in Castle Rock when I visited a friend in Colorado Springs. At $35/lb, these two small chunks ran about $45. I would not have bought these except when hand selecting. I looked for flame, but also good shape for slabbing, and little matrix/waste. I think I got clean 2mm slices because it is very solid dense agate. Some plume material has softer plumes, but these are as solid as the clear bits. I had not thought about a white backing. I have some white agate sliced thin for another project and can see how that looks.

That's some hot stuff Daniel!! I like the idea of capping the thinner slices, more bang flame for the buck!

I have a piece of this rough. Don't forget to post the doublets/triplets when you're done. I would love to see how it turns out. Right now I'm not sure how thin to cut it. If the doublets or triplets work, then thinner can be better to show off the flames...!

Beautiful stuff. I like the 4mm best with the fire glow in the sky. Jim

yes, but when the 4mm slice does not have the bright light of the scanner illuminating it, it looks almost as dark and drab as the face of the uncut rough.
that is the challenge here. how to get the flames to show.

Boy I haven't seem that variety in awhile. back in the 70's they sold that as " Forest Fire Flame". I guess because it sort of has the flames with darker smoke and ash coming off the top and trees below. I was really amazing how any varieties of flame came out of that area of Mexico. The agate with inclusions guy has pics of lots of them for those of you who haven't checked his site out.....Mel

Sounds like you need to facet the back and put a pavilion on the back to let the light inside, LOL.

Yeah, oddly enough it came in two subvarieties. One with red flames topped by black smoky extensions and the other reversed with black bases and red tops to the flames. really beautiful stuff and I've only seen a little in very old collections these days. Used to be a shop in Santa Barbara, CA that had a huge bin of the various types and it was super expensive even back then. *L* By that I mean like $8 per pound which was a lot of money back when I made $647 per month. That same shop is where I got my really fancy crazy lace in my collection too. He had a source for truly incredible Mexican material...Mel
