I purchased some Polar Jade from Jade West and have been working on a bit of it. This stuff has great color and translucence as well as cool green flecks. I purchased different pieces from the polar, Kutchko, and Ogden mines so i could get an idea of the differences between them and i like the glowing color of the polar the best, .... it was also by far the more expensive piece.
So far i have just slabbed off a couple little pieces and have almost finished my first piece. It was supposed to look like three parallel waves but it lost it's look a bit from what i drew. I made the whole piece tapered to try to highlight the translucence on the thinner parts and it also gives it an interesting balance which makes it hang slightly offset. I am also working on a slightly larger piece that is going to be a pine cone but it is very, very, very slow going. Even on this piece i have spent innumerable hours sanding and polishing and i wish i made it just a bit bigger so i could get my dremel polishing tools between the waves, as it is i have just been cutting slivers of wood and wrapping with sandpaper to sand it and it is sooooooo slow.
This piece isn't quite finished and there are still a few small scratches i need to clean up but you can't really see them in the pics. Overall i am pretty happy with it although the flawed section at the bottom with the slightly brown color disappoints me since the rest of the piece is such nice material.
Enough chatter, on with the pics.
And the last pic is just after i started the dremel work on one of the curls. You can still see the saw cuts of the preformed shape and when i set it down for a break it looked like a rough bear outline to me.
