Going to build an crate type enclosure for a 12" saw. Will be mounting the sides on hinges to open flat for a workspace. Hinged back panel will also serve as motor mount, hinge tensioning of belt.
I've always just used 1/3 or 1/2hp motors on everything. For this project, though, I'd want the physically smallest motor possible to run the saw. Maybe a 1/6 or 1/8hp would suffice? If not, does anyone know of any particular small body motors of the appropriate size to suggest? Not really sure what I need to look for. Will need to plug directly into a standard house 110 outlet.

You may get by with a 1/3 hp but 1/2 would be better. Saws need power to work well. 1/3 will run most 10" saws. Covington uses a 1/2 hp on their 12" saws. I'm guessing the hinge mount may be a problem as the motor may lift when the blade contacts the rock.

My thoughts exactly John. Years ago I had a home made cabbing machine with a hinged motor mount. Had to hold the motor down when I turned it on, to keep it from throwing the belt. I/2 hp on a 12" saw. I tried a 1/4 hp motor on a 10" saw. The saw would bog down and stop. Had to switch to 1/3 hp.

Will plan on a 1/2 then unless I can't find a small one. Do the thinner looking motors that run fans provide enough power for the 12"? Then again, I don't know if those can be wired the way I need.
