What's the difference between a Lortone 3A and a Lortone 3A-NR1?

It may be an earlier designation. My dad was a Lortone dealer until the mid 70's. All the good stuff is gone but I found a lot of recycled boxes with "NR Barrels", etc. labels. Lortone would know if you send them an e-mail or call.

Thanks John. I sent them an email earlier today. I should hear something tomorrow.

Did you get a reply from Lortone? If so, what did they say? I've noticed the "NR" versions selling dirt cheap and have been thinking about buying one.

Greetings from California. I hope that responding to a 2-year old thread as my first post isn't too annoying. I just ordered a 3A-NR1 from ebay, will see how it works! It definitely looks about 40 years old from the pictures. Googling that model number brought me here.
My introduction rotary tumbler was a gift, the nat'l geo type, and it crapped out after about 6 months. but now I am hooked, looking forward to learning more from you all.

Maybe the NR stands for Not/No Rocks, Meaning designed for like tumbling ammo cases or jewelry for cleaning?

Maybe the NR stands for Not/No Rocks, Meaning designed for like tumbling ammo cases or jewelry for cleaning? I dunno, might be. Will find out how it does and report back. I opted for this used bad boy over a new Chicago Electric rotary, at about the same price point, based on some poor reviews. Seems like this is a case of “they don’t make ‘em like they used to” or at least I’m hoping.

Chicago Electric are hit and miss from what I hear, some love them and they last forever with proper care and some die in 4 months, The advantage to a new Chicago Electric(and likely the only real advantage) is that if you buy the extended warenty and something breaks harbor freight will give you a whole new machine no questions asked. I have even heard that if you dont include the barrels when you return it, they will still replace the whole machine so you would have double the barrels, tho I personally think that is kind shady myself, but if they are full of rock and slurry I can kinda understand.

No worries. It's an unanswered question. And welcome to the forum from central New York!

I got it from the ebay seller, and it definitely is old. Plugged it in and it appeared to work, however with the weight of a full barrel the belt had slippage. So I adjusted the motor position within the case and it seemed to tighten things up. It ran for about 7 days and then the belt broke I ordered some replacement 3A belts and they haven't arrived. But in the meantime, this tumbler seems to do it's job. My guess is that the NR1 descriptor was just part of early models and then was dropped for whatever reason, but that is just a guess. I'll post another update when this batch is done.

Pro tip, when you get the new belt, take one to your local harware store and get rubber o-rings the same size and far cheaper and use those as a belt, this will work on most machines that dont have a propritary belt. It wont work if you get a tumble-bee but it does on a Nat Geo and should on a lortone too

I have been running it more or less continuously since November. knock on wood!
