What is the best way to remove a cab when it was doped using super glue on an aluminum rod. I had removed it in the past by heat although this time around it didn't want to release and I was afraid of letting the cab get to hot. Thanks Stu

An overnight soak in acetone should do it. This is exactly why I only use dop wax.

I've been taking the stone and the dop and using a sharp knife to press into the "seal" all the way around the dop stick so there is essentially a crease in the super glue right where it meets the dop - but all the way around.
I push as deep into the glue as I feel I can and once it is all the way around it has been snapping off.
NOW - I dopped a piece of obsidian last night as a test of something softer, so after I finish polishing the front tonight I will see if I can remove it or not without destroying it.

No reason acetone wouldn't work but for most superglues, adding more superglue will dissolve what was already there and it can all be wiped off.

Thanks everyone. I thought of super acetone but wasn't sure. Funny They always drop right off the stick when I hold it over a flame for a bit but this one wouldn't budge. As far as me cutting around the the edge of the glue would defeat the purpose of dopping in the first place because I would end up doing more damage to my fingers than the diamond wheels.LOL Stu

I use an alcohol lamp. Heat the stone right where he glue is and within about 10 seconds it softens the glue and I can usually break it off. Of course I use screws for my dops...so i'm not sure how it would work on a bigger diameter dop. I used to just use a knife...but I always ended up breaking too many. steve

I hold my stick in such a way that I can put down pressure on one side of the stone and up pressure on the other side of the stone and 98 percent pop right off. If I work on the narrow side of the stone I do not break them. I am a pretty damn tough old bastard so it may not work for you. lol. Jim

Has anyone ever tried turpentine?
I ask because in another reality I am an oil painter and I have this "odorless" (not quite) turpentine called "turpenoid" that I might try out. I use it to clean oil paints out of their brushes.

Fingernail polish remover is acetone with a little something added so it won't dry skin out, if you don't want a gallon of acetone around you can use it instead.

Umm, I have set them in the freezer just like wax and they have come off. If they don't want to let go after that, I then use fingernail polish remover. Fran

The freezer never worked consistently for me. I broke a couple after several hours in the freezer when I tried to pop them off by hand.
I've also tried heating the metal dopstick with a small propane torch & broken a couple that way too.
Acetone is the only surefire way for me. The only problem is when I've had to fill pits with superglue, I can't use acetone. Someday I'll perfect my vacuum dopstick & let you know how it works.

I always just soak my dops in acetone. I use aluminum dops also. It usually only takes a couple of hours to soften the super glue, sometimes a little longer. If it takes more than a few hours I just let them set overnight and then they just fall right off. I have done this with lots of opals and fire agates and it have never harmed a stone,

Would acetone hurt sandstone?

My 95% solution is the freezer. 75% off the time they come off with little pressure or even fall off the stick when in the freezer. Plan B is to take the cab out of the freezer, put a razor blade between the dop and the cab and whack the razor blade with a utility knife. I have had a very low failure rate doing that. If I am concerned about a particular cab leaving a divot or breaking, I would soak in acetone.

Two failures were from the same material; petrified palm wood. Minimal pressure to the stick and a divot in the back. I don't think I will make number three.
