I really enjoy seeing the carvings in process. It takes a very artistic and talented few that can create things like this. Looking forward to seeing this one progress. Steve

thats the 1st as its "in progress" I consider it as just roughed in and now it needs balancing out as some parts need a little more refining. I will post pictures as I go in detailing it out

Very challenging project! Would definitely like to see the steps as you go. Just a small thing... but the bicep is a bit too narrow, so her face will have to be a little bit smaller. A drawing now may help with proportioning. I think it's really interesting that you did split 'feet' . And what a beautiful stone!!

It will be beautiful. Lovely idea for a lovely stone. I'm a bit curious about how you take commissions. In the early days, I did it, but I learned NOT to do it. Doesn't work for me. Too much stress and then I had a few flakes who went ahead and bought something else while I was still working on the job!!! Do you get an upfront nonrefundable deposit? If I ever do commissions again, that's what I'll do, but I hope to never do commissions again, ha ha. Very fascinated about how artists make that work.

I only do commissions with at least 1/2 up front and the rest on delivery, if they do not take it they forfit the up front money. I make that very clear at the start. For people that I have known a long time and that have asked me to do carving/jewelry for them in the past I don't do the up front charges.
this piece is for a friend and not too sure on what to charge for the larimar aside from what I will ask for the work.

Its a bit slow going and my hands are sore right now as I do a bit of the lay-out by hand with tiny diamond bits in a pin vice. you can take material off but you can't put it back so I am tip toeing into the face and now that that lay-out is there I will go back to the leg and body portion and get that more in balance to take a rest from the face. Don't want to blow it at this point

Diane; going is good. It always seems to look the worst, just before the finish-line. Just keep your patience.
If things get frustrating do what I usually do; just start something else and/or put it away for the day and get back to it tomorrow. Usually, ideas solving the problem or additions turn up in the meantime when I least expect it.
Looks great thus far, getting close to the finish and look forward to the end-result.

yes, that is what I do when I hit a wall in getting the correct details or get burnt out on it. I'm thinking I won't try to do too much detailing the face as it is so small and all my tiny dental drills seem like great big nails when working on it. Now I have to think on how to do the hair

I found over the last couple of months that too much detail, not only increases the danger of things going awry, but often the details where not helpful for the overall picture and it looked better without them. So don't worry too much about it, the face can be recognized already.
P.s.: Just remembered: Yesterday the annual Jewelery trade fair here in Hong Kong (biggest fair in Asia of any trade) opened (mostly "fine jewelry"), according to a lot of papers writing about it there is a definite trend establishing itself. Carved precious and semiprecious materials mixed with high end faceted stones in Silver and gold. The most interesting part of it is that suddenly other material than Jade turns up and motive carving is coming on strongly (Chinese always loved them, but was not that popular for international trade).
