After attempting a few carvings depicting known shapes, there where some friends who raised their voices, directing me back to something that I usually do well and like; namely contemporary freestyle with a few twists. Now after finding out that I had found some material here in Hong Kong that might be suitable to be cut and polished, I had to try something befitting its relative uniqueness as lapidary material. LOL Cut off the test-polished section, and set out with the idea of something kite-shaped to accommodate most of the colored sections. The only real challenge / requirements though, where to maximize the surface area and minimize the overall weight. So, as some of you already know, I just sit down and start to cut and grind without any real plan and let it go whichever way it leads. Here is what came out of it: Indoor At the door natural light early evening (no sun in sight since days): The top is done completely, but the back still needs a little work-over (need to go back to 600grid paper) and erase some mistakes and then fully polish it up. Now the question remains, what material is that? Chert has been suggested. Flint too, but I'm pretty sure its not Flint.

That is a great piece , as said the pupa cocoon design fits the stone . Chert rhymes with Kurt , but it is looking like a metamorphic now . What is the hardness?

I love it Kurt! I also like the fact that oftentimes the best pieces occur when you sit back and just let the rock talk!!!

Serpentinized is a better word, which encompasses a huge variety . hard to tell this one from a pic, it is green ? looks alot like greenschist , but also has affinity to jasper.

That's a very interesting carving. When I first looked at the top picture I saw what looked like a panda bear in the lighter area, it looked like a panda on a cloud to me. Probably just my imagination but I thought it looked cool. I love the carving, very interesting!

Kurt, I have been going through your posts and can't comment on all the wonderful pieces. I don't have enough words. You are a seriously talented soul!! I can see and feel the artist in you in the way you bring rocks to life. I chose this one to comment on, because it is my favorite piece, so far. There is something about it that really speaks to me. I love the freeform shape and sinuous lines. This is what I would call Contemporary, but it has an ancient Alien feel, too. I love how you respected the rock and allowed it to be part of the design. This has a mystery that tickles my brain and stirs unrecognized memories. Truly, this is a work of art.
