We inherited an old Craftsman flap lap. Pressure washed it and clean it up pretty good. We haven't had any lap machine till now, and just want to get one diamond disc to see how it works.
If you had to buy only one diamond disc, which grit would you get for starting to polish the back of a cabochon? Grits come in 60, 100, 170, 275, 325, 1200 and 3000. We figure we could finish polishing on the D.P. Genie.

I think we might be twins, I received an old Craftsmen flat lap, mine came with a 100 grit, so lets hope that is what others answer.

Cool beans..... My buddy Ted in Tucson will fix you up... 100 grit out of the gate is a rough customer. The thing to do is get a set to start. 180 340 600 1500 3000 .... He will put a 100 in a 5 set. If you have a 6" they are like $95 for all 5. I think the set in 8" is $105. Do you have a 1/4 20 threaded hole in the 1/2" stud? I think they did. If so then you can use flex disc for the pre polish and polish.

The 60 or 100 will get you a nice flat surface fast but you will need progressive bigger numbers to get the deep scratches out to get to polish. If you just wanted to flat finish the back of your cabs and only wanted to buy only one lap I think I would get a 220, or about, and then finish on your soft wheels on your Genie. Don

Yes, I was thinking maybe the 275 or 325 disc and finish up on the Genie. I was at the Inland Lapidary website, and they don't have a 220. Then also get the plastic master disk for the backing to replace the old piece of wood backing that's on it now. It's a 6 inch with a 1/2 inch arbor hole. If it all works, we can add more grits later.
Thanks.

Thanks, Chuck. Will check it out. Then maybe I can get more than one grit. :-)

Kingsley North is good to deal with. The Rock Lady has good prices and good quality too. Their 6" diamond disks are $75 for 5 with free shipping. I have the 8" and really like them. rocklady1.com/Specials.htmlGood luck with the lap! Nate
