Great point Jake, thanks:)!!
The box may have to be repacked along the way... just try to be as considerate as possible of those who are coming after you. Those who abuse this, well, the pictures are going to tell the story, right:)?

UncleStu, what are you on about now:)? There are a few people who have NOT posted their location on their avatar. If they don't disclose it soon, they are going to get dropped from this box. It was just a heads up:).

Helen, Florida has some awfully nice petrified coral. Donnie sent me a few pieces and they were beautiful. Check around building sites where they're digging. Don, I'm in Central Florida, and I have heard that they have fossilized agates on the west coast... but I'm not on the west coast... we SHOULD make a field trip out there and see if we can find some tho... that's actually a good idea:).

First I have to cab up the small pieces I already have, figure out how to cut the rocks I have, find a place to put it all!! And naturally, that means every time I see something I DON"T have, I want it... um...

In explanation, to help this box go around, we NEED everyone's location, so we can ideally plan it in a loop around the country. This means the least transit time so there is less waiting. I haven't yet figured out if that matters more, or doing a sequence based on what people have said they would most like to have, and who has said that's what they'd like to send yet.
What would make no sense is crisscrossing the entire country several times, ie., Fla to Oregon, Oregon to Georgia, Georgia to California, because it would result in longer delays and transit time.
The first post is going to change and change and change as the box gets updated, first with the signups, then with the rules as we formalize, then with the final box traveling sequence of who's shipping to who, then links to the photos of who got what and sent what. We should all be able to chit chat on the thread, but the key info will all still be on that first post for those who may go away a few days and come back to 20 pages to read to figure out what's going on... but don't want to. They can see at a glance what's going ON by looking at the first note.
2 people did not have their info on their membership. That's Ulstergeki and I think Kap, who pm'd it to me earlier but updated it on his profile (or maybe it was already on his profile, he had already pm'd it to me so I didn't need to check).
I was tongue in cheek bugging Ulstergeki to check in and let us know. If you look at the first page with the list of participants, there is only 1 name without a location.
That said, this has nothing to do with your strange 'secret' you pm'd me out of the blue, Stu. If you feel the need to post that publicly, go for it, but I haven't done that, and wasn't planning to. I'm talking about this box here on this thread, and that's all this thread should be, ok? Hope that makes you feel better Stu, you need to lay off the funny juice:).
Lets all just forget this and move ahead with the box:).

It seems to me that the purpose here is to replace items with different items instead of the same. That way someone that has extra tools can more or less trade them for slabs or something else that they do not have. If we are trading same for same the box is not going to change up very much and be the same all the way through. If I have more slabs than I need then I do not want to trade for more slabs that I do not need. Am I making sense here. Looks like trading different but equal value would be the norm. I have extra of almost everything and maybe there would be a different choice in the box of something that I do not have too much of or not at all Jim. Jim

Jim, what you're saying makes perfect sense, you don't need slabs, then don't take slabs, take jewelry findings, take rocks to cut, Don said he'd contribute some lucite displays for specimens, take some of those (but again, be nice, don't take every single one of a bag of multiples so no one else can get any). I'm going to include broach pins, earring loops for both pierced and unpierced, head pins, and a small variety of hard to find jewelry findings. Take some of those for a few slabs, see:)?
It will change because not everyone has the same stuff. The only concern I have is that the people further down the line get the same opportunity to have nice things as the people further up the line, preferably even nicer for their patience waiting longer for the box to get to them.
If ALL you have are slabs, then it is OK to replace everything you take with slabs. If what you mostly want is small and expensive, take the larger rocks out to balance the size out for the slabs you put in. See:)?

Helen, please count me in. I'm in California not far south of San Francisco.
Machines: 4" tile saw, 10" tile saw, Genie, 6" flat lap, and a small vibrating tumbler used for metal only, 2 Dremels, a Foredom, mini-butane torch, pencil butane torch, propane torch
Activities: bead weaving, chainmaille, pearl knotting, stone setting, and metalsmithing. I'm learning how to cab and to carve. My website (click on my banner) shows some of what I do.
What I can put in the box: rocks (rainbow obsidian and other types), good looking agates, jaspers, slabs, rough, Clear Creek Jade (CA), and others; findings for jewelers; beads; a finished item of the type in my shop. I'll check to see what is wanted by the person I'm sending the box to; maybe I can supply that, too.
I'd like: something you made, focal beads, rocks for carving, picture rocks/slabs
Thanks for doing this.

Florida has agatized coral... but many of the areas where you could formerly get it are now off limits, and there is less of it around to get these days. Well, tonite, I found someone who's selling off some from an estate, and I'm going to go help her set up her sale next Thurs, so I get first pick on what she's got!!! She said she had a lot of druzy/geodes. I don't even have any myself yet!!
I'm bringing this up, because this is a great opportunity to be able to add some florida agatized coral to the newbie box!! I am supposed to go over there on the 24, so the box won't start til after the 24, because I will definitely be buying some pieces for the box too!!
We have 5 more spots for this swap, so if you haven't joined yet, hope you consider it, if it's like most traveling boxes, it will be a ton of fun:).
