Helen, regarding your Alaska shipping comment. Geoff and I have shipped to each other before. Takes about four days.

What a cool idea Helen! We just got back from vacation so I missed this :-( Hopefully someone will start another one after this one that I can get in on. I mostly have opals and pet wood, so I'd be more into seeing everything in hand and maybe swap one thing out. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's posts :-) Helen, you can give my spot to them. I already have something that you made and since I work with only local rocks they should have a chance at this run of the box. Thanks Jim

It seems that I have thrown a monkey wrench into a bunch of planning and caused some embarrassment. I apologize for that and ask alisha to not be upset if we stick with the original plan and you can get into the next box. Thank you. Jim

Paul, thanks for the helpful info! Maybe we'll get the swap done sooner, and Alisha can join the next one after bugs are worked out:). I'm waiting til Monday to make final changes, in case someone didn't see it yet, I have no problems with changes, I was just a little snarky because I didn't want to make changes minutes after I got done with the schedule. At this point, I have to make some changes anyway, so redoing it again is no problem, please let me know before Monday:).
Quick comment on this... I've been asked what the big deal with scheduling is, and why it matters if people get substituted anywhere, so I guess I did a bad job explaining...
I have not participated in the previous forum Traveling boxes... so I have no idea what the protocol for them is. For me to host this swap, I do it the way I've done them before, which is really the glass traveling box way.
So I did this more planned, with the idea that rather than a total pot luck, everyone in it would be more likely to get stuff they really need and want. What good would it do a newbie with no saw to get whole rocks? What good for someone who collects slabs to get preforms?
While everyone else is putting in different stuff, at least 1 person, the person shipping to you, has stuff you say you like. That's why I asked what people liked first, so it could be matched to the people who say they have it to ship. I must have explained that really badly for there to be misunderstandings about it. Sorry!!
I asked for suggestions and recommendations and no one made any or objected, so I went with the original premise. I matched every single person with someone who matched what they want, or someone who said they had every type. But doing that means we have a shipping order.
We'll see how it works in practice, but this should be fun for everyone, and I hope it is:).

Hey sorry about not being on. Got home from Prudhoe on Thursday night, then spent friday on two planes t Wisconsin with my servic dog and a baby. Got to Oshkosh at 2 am on saturday, then was being harrassed by family all day for keeping their granddaughter so far away.
I'm okay with whatever. I have 6 tumblers and a flat lap so I can shine anything. The tundra was showing through the snow on Thursday so when I'm up there again in a couple weeks I can pick some local jasper and agates. I have plans to put a few slabs of agate from Chicken, Alaska. It's petrified peat bog. Some jade, some thunder eggs, some gold ore, zinc ore...

Hey, Helen - Having never done this before either, the planning seemed quite normal to me. LOL! I saw the other threads on the traveling wire, traveling rock box, etc. but didn't really 'get' what was up. So, thank you for putting in so much effort to make this a fun setup! I'm looking forward to this!
Thanks Paul
[off-topic] Geoff, hope you have a chance to get some rest! Sounds like a lot of traveling...

Wow Geoff, Prudhoe Bay? I worked for Amoco once upon a time, and wanted so badly to go work for Arco or Exxon so I could go up there . . . so excited to see what you have up there! You'll be getting some Mojave Desert jaspers and jasp-ags from me.

Helen, I scrolled through a bit and I think you are AWESOME!!!!!!! I am not the least bit surprised at your outstanding organizational abilities..... never doubted it a bit especially after seeing what you do first hand! WTG on hosting this! I didn't join on this round but I'm so anxious to follow this box! Bookmarking it right now! Like I said.... I only scrolled through without reading everything, but have you got enough to start the box? Do you need more? If you are waiting to start until the 29th and need tumbling material then... let me know asap. I'd be happy to contribute and send some great stuff out to you in the next day or two!!! ( ) I've got more than I could ever tumble in a life time Some of it has even been through the first round of roughing.....

What 'off page' activity? The fact that as the host of this box I asked you for your address and contact info? You know where I got that idea from? The main 'traveling box', and I posted it after Rock Hobbit did, because I realized it might be important for me to know as a backup for the shipper.
There's no other 'off page' activity I know of, so hope you enlighten us about it:). As for shunning... you must be joking?

Krystee, opened this thread and did not see your note above:).
Thanks!! Right now, I'm thinking we may not need help with the box anymore, because I am still going to get those Florida agates for it on the 24. I was going to include some glass tumble material (not packed yet, I have posted photos already of what is going in the box so far, but am not done til after I see the size of the Florida agates. But if you want to send a small bag for everyone, they'd all probably appreciate it, and I will put it in the box:).
Alisha, with John dropping, you are in if you'd like to be now:).

I'd love to be in Thanks Helen! I have lots of petrified wood, tumbled (not by me) tigers eyes and welo opals (mostly low to mid grade, but they are great for practice). If anyone likes the milky white quartz, that's everywhere around here. Oh, and I have a couple of opalized (common opal, no "Sparklies") limb casts/twigs if people like those... Things I like: Umm, I think it would be easier to ask what I don't like. LOL... I like moss agates, dino bone, opals of all sorts (my latest favorite is the orange-y colored ones from Juniper Ridge or the "Honey Opal" from Arkansas, I think) Oh, and I'm looking for an Australian Opalized Clam shell for a necklace I'm making if anyone knows where I can get one? Another thing I'm into lately is cutting open geodes/t-eggs, so if anyone has those, that would be cool I like picture jaspers, obsidian, labradorite, carnelian and petrified wood of course. Right now, most of my pet. wood stash comes from Virgin Valley, NV, so some from other locations would be great to spice up my collection. I'm sure there is more I could offer in trade or state that I like, but I can't think of anything right now...LOL A major reason for my wanting to participate is to see some of the stuff in person. So, as a heads up, I may not trade anything out of it. I hope that's not a huge problem. Oh, and I can handle small rough or slabs. I use a wet tile saw with a 7" diamond blade for cutting and do the rest with my dremel by hand...

Sorry Helen All the other boxes I have been in the person before me sends me a PM wanting to know my address to send it to me so I thought that was the way we were doing it now. I thought that they would be the only one that needed to know my address. P.S. I check the thread everyday but do not read every post. PM sent with my address

Oh. Sorry Kap. As I posted, I've not been part of the traveling box HERE before, but I've done it with glass items... where everyone in it has a great time talking about it, what they want, what they will put in, and it's a real community builder:). I don't tend to pm about it because there's nothing secret about it... NO ONE is asking you to publicly post your address... I asked people to PM it to me, as RockHobbit did.
At first, I didn't think I needed it either honestly.... only the shipper needs it right? But then I saw RockHobbit post that people needed to pm it to her, and it dawned on me why. If life makes you busy and you forget to post on the forum for a month, and it's YOUR week... how will the person shipping to you get your address if you didn't already give it to them, and what if you can't participate anymore?
If someone drops, for personal emergency, health, whatever, and you don't check the forum, how will you know if the box is coming to YOU because someone had to get skipped? Then, NO ONE can reach you to find out, and everyone after that person is now held up for an unknown amount of time to see if you log in to check the forums, nor does anyone have your address.
This way, I can contact you to ask you if you are still participating, and request that you to give your addy to the shipper. I did not realize everyone in the swap wasn't reading the thread to see if anything changed:).

It's good stuff! ps.. don't wan't to know about the notes or what I missed regarding what's above....don't care! (I am not going to read it ) RTH is my happy place!
