Oh man, that's no fun. I had a lab / Shepard mix that got a face full on a three day hunting trip. I spent an hour and a half pulling quills out of him. If he had not trusted me as much as he did, I think he would have gone for my jugular. We were both drenched in sweat and exhausted. If one pulls the quills themselves, ya need to clip off the butt ends first as the quills swell up with air, and the barbs point back, pulling the spine deeper.
Those crystals are really nice! Bill

Ouch !! That hurts just looking at it. Sure glad we don't have those cactus on legs around here. My dog just tries to go after skunks.

Cool crystals but ouchy for the doggy. I have to play porcupine herder almost every night in the yard as I herd the resident porkies out of the game fence before they eat all my wife's new native plants. Made a mistake the other night when I herded a young one into my live trap and transported him down to the creek. Thought he was free living but momma showed up later in the evening hooting for him so I had to go back down to the creek, find and catch junior with my welding gloves, and bring him back to mamma. My gloves looked like your doggy's muzzle but the gloves allowed me to handle junior with no damage to my hands. Baby porkies are really cute little critters but no friend to aggressive dogs...Mel

Geoff, are those herkimer diamonds?

Well, in the same way that people serve standing rib roast as Prime Rib. They are water clear double terminated quartz crystals, just not from Herkimer, NY.

You are certainly making the best of the summer hounding season. Run while it is warm up there. I just looked at your moonstone and it looks to me like you are hounding up quite a collection. Jim

Beautiful finds!! Really like the one you recently posted and the cluster, too. Hurts to look at the picture of your dog and I'm glad she's okay. How long did it take to remove the quills?

It took me 30 minutes to pull 10. It took the vet 3 minutes to pull 65.
