Not to worry girls. That's only smoke from fires outside of S.D. Just showing how far the smoke has traveled.

How often do wildfires occur? That is, once these are all burned out, does that mean you guys won't get another for 10-20 years because the underbrush is all cleared?

All depends on rainfall here in the northern plains. Lots of rain = lots of brush. If we get lots of rain or heavy snow pack, lots of brush will grow. If that's followed by a long, dry period, prairie fires can and will happen. The nearest to me so far was 100 yards. Started by a neighbor who just happened to be a land management specialist, working for the county extension service. Damned government employee decided to burn off brush on his property on a windy day.

I am 25 miles from the Beartrap canyon fire. We had a wet spring here, 3 weeks ago it was in the 30's - rain mixed with snow. It turned off hot, and we have had winds that dried out all the vegetation. last years grasses are tinder dry, and the new growth has a low enough water content that it will burn.
As Dicky said, I too will be scouring the 14,000+ acres after the next rain for agates. We have another fire nearby in Pony, in addition to the fire down by Billings.
