I'm gonna be blogging about this adventure soon, but I wanted to post here, too- I got my genie and after a panic about the wheels looking wrong, I got to doing my first agate to break it in. This is a graveyard plume. It has shiny spots at the top tht weren't evident until next to the last wheel. Pretty cool. I did this last night. My UPS man didn't bring the genie till 6:30 pm! So, I didn't have much time to play on the kitchen table. When I was done, I looked it over real good and decided I could do better, so I ran through a few more wheels in the morning. I also used 14,000 after the picture was taken. It turned out better than I thought it would. I think it was beginner's luck because I ran into issues on other stones all day long today. But, it's all a learning experience so I don't mind a bit. Attachments:

You are off to a hell of a good start. The edge is even and you got a nice dome. Like Randy said, it will only get better and faster now. Jim

Tela, beautiful job on a great looking stone!!! My first one, I followed all of the rules and had folks around who wouldn't let me move up. It came out great... Then I started doing them on my own and having problems. I knew I was doing something wrong but couldn't figure out what. Turns out, I was doing too little on the lower wheels and leaning into the higher ones too much. Take your time with it and enjoy!!!! How do you like the machine!?!?!?!?

What was the time period between when you first began working with stones until you purchased the genie. I'm just curious as to what my future holds. Great job. I'm jealous of your genie. Hope you have years of fun ahead Bill

Wow! Thanks everyone! Cathy- that is very, very good advice. I found myself doing EXACTLY that today. Thank you! Bill, I've been working with rocks for a long time, but I just started cutting a few weeks ago when BikerRandy showed me how. He's a great teacher! The pictured cab is my... third or fourth cab. I have wanted to do it for years and years! I'm having a blast. Don't get me wrong, though... I have made some big mistakes and made a mess of a few stones today. If you want to read about it, I posted it on my blog today. To give you an idea, it is called "Cabbing: The Good; The Bad; The Ugly" LOL! www.blog.telaformosa.com/2012/06/cabbing-good-bad-ugly.html

Yeah Horray for you Tela. LOL, I had to chuckle when I saw the picture "at the wheel", and noticed your beautiful fingernails. Very nice cab and what a wonderful blog. Jo

Thank you, Jo In that picture, they had been cut. They were shorter by the end if the day. Especially my thumb nails. But, that's ok, they grow like wild fire and I'll be needing to cut them soon enough. Seriously, I need to dop.

Not too shabby for first cabs. It's a learning curve. Each day you'll get a little bit quicker and better. Just be thankful you didn't have to learn on the old silicon carbide wheels and belts like so many of us old timers did.
