During my sneaking rock stuff in while the grandkids have been up North, I came across this stone that I've been saving for the time when I'd be able to groove it. The original stone was not much bigger than this, was black with red spots and no shine. It's heavy for it's size and completely changed colors and everything when I began to polish it. It also has silver specks all over it. I found it up on the beach by Petoskey, Michigan. It was relatively soft but took a nice shine at 3000. Any help with ID would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! Cathy

The silver flecks, color and weight bring to mind hematite, at least for the "black" parts. I can't get a good feel for the colors from your photo (and my little computer). I also don't know if magnitite is heavy as well, but perhaps someone can help out here on that.

That's fitting, Hub! It's a really hard piece to get the colors on Susan. It's changes depending on the light. Sometimes the green is a really bright green, and then you turn and it looks dark, dark grey. Weird stone!

The first thought I had was an odd coral of some sort that has a lot of mineral replacements but it is really hard to say. I think it looks neat, what ever it is! Fran

Might be a piece of stromatolite, or something like a banded iron formation that's been distorted/rearranged.
