This would probably have been my finest cab to date by some huge factor... Was still on rough grind - you can see I had a ways to go but the shape was coming along perfectly and I had the sweetest orb pattern going across the front and continuing across the back. A fracture formed near the matrix and threw a chip... *sigh* I can fix it - it just won't be as spectacular. If it broke in half I wouldn't have a problem gluing a thin slice of another stone into it as an intarsia project but I'm not going to glue a chip back in place. If it's not something I would buy because of that, then I'm not going to be creating that. Anyway, here's some pictures to lament... 1 - Obverse (shallow dome) 2 3 - Reverse (high dome) Thanks for looking!

Well, if you epoxy it now before finishing, you may not notice it very much... and if you wire wrap it, maybe you can loop the wire around the front of that little chip so you don't see it? It's not impacting the face of the high dome anyway...

I feel for you Frank, I suffered the loss/ damage of what had the makings of a really nice Laguna lace cab yesterday. However as Randi and Don pointed out it broke right along the seam following the jagged banding which now gives the cab a really cool look. Stu

I always have to be careful cutting Bruneau, if it gets too hot it throws chips like that or gets little fractures in it, I really have to pour the water to it to keep it cool. Sometimes I cut a little and then set it aside and let it cool and come back to it later. Slow and steady wins the race.
Really nice pattern you go there, it will still make a nice cab just not the one you wanted.

Jason - I know! grrrr... Stu - *ouch!* I saw your post - thought I replied - I'll re-check! Tony - I use a ton of water but yah you're most likely right because I was at 80 grit and pressing really hard. It's also possible, because of the location, that I caused a tiny fracture (that I didn't see when I went to grind) right on the saw. I'm a very aggressive cutter - I really push things through whether they want to go or not, heh heh. That particular chunk of Bruneau stalled my 10" three times! Hard stuff, ha ha! Gotta love it though - so gorgeous! And thank you so much for selling me such a wonderful bunch of rock - that is the single best box I have ever gotten. And there's lots more orbs to go - you can be sure I'll be taking it easier on the rest (I may never get any bruneau this nice again - a treasure!). And thanks everyone - I'll post more pics when I decide how to re-cut for best use of orbs (are those killer awesome or what!). It'll be awhile - need to shelf it for awhile and come back to when I'm a little less emotional about it <-- kissy face cracks me up...

I know how heartbreaking that can be! Just grind it down and get it going again. It is too beautiful to set aside for long. Fran

I'd keep it and work it into something else.

Thanks - and yes, definitely still a keeper That's exactly what I'll do - rework it into something else. Still, gotta set it aside and give it time to reflect on what it did, heh heh... or maybe that's the other way around - I was skinning it...

Oh man, so sorry. That would have been killer too. I'm sure you'll make a nice save, though. Bruno is one of my favs and I was glad to read the hints Tony gave. Maybe, it will help next time.
