Nice job! With the RS, do the spots disappear when wet? If so, then you could fill them to make them disappear. Honestly, I would try Hot Stuff type glue over opticon for this. But, I'm no expert.

Yep, tiny pits are not uncommon in Royal Sahara. I'd try the glue as that's pricy material....Mel

Mel, do you know why they are white and what they are? I'm working a larger one now and the dendrites are proving problematic with pitting...those I can understand but the white stuff I don't get. Great stone other than the pitting.

I love the RSJ. Haven't see it spot like that, or pit. It is usually sweet to work beyond the normal. T

Tony, I love the patterns in it but am not thrilled with it for working with. To me it seems soft and out of the three I'm working, two have pitting. Flame agate is kind of a disappointment too due to pitting. After looking around at finished cabs, I'm seeing I'm not alone in that with either stone. People are just putting them up there with the pits untouched. I'm not so much into doing that but learning a ton from working with both of these materials!

That's the whole thing Cathy, Work experience will get you to where you want to be! I like the cabs! It just depends on what floats yer boat as far as a finished piece. Were they mine; Like Mel said, I would address those spots and turn that RSJ into what it should be as it is a pricey material. Looking forward to what you decied to do............gary

From what I've been told...some picture jaspers are not real jasper? Biggs Picture jasper did pit sometimes real bad..."IN DOING MY RESEARCH I CAME ACROSS AN ARTICLE WRITTEN IN THE LAPIDARY JOURNAL IN 1968 AND WAS STUNNED TO READ THIS EXCERPT…”BIGGS JASPER, A SILICIFIED CLAY, AND PLEASE, LET US NOT CALL THIS MATERIAL A JASPER, NO MATTER WHAT ITS TEXTURE OR COLORING. DUE TO CHANGES IN ITS COMPOSITION AND LACK OF SUFFICIENT SILICA IN SOME OF ITS AREAS, THIS BEAUTIFUL PICTURE ROCK WILL NEVER QUITE MAKE THE GRADE AS TOP-QUALITY CABACHON MATERIAL.” rockhoundblog.com/regular-postings/the-history-of-biggs-jasper-deschutes-picture-jasper-oregon " Jasper definition is: "a compact, opaque, cryptocrystalline variety of quartz, usually colored red: often used in decorative carvings." So if picture jasper is siliconized sedimentary mud then it would not have the cryptocrystalline crystals? I ponder these things...but not much. ;-)

They are both Beautiful. I used to think of the old saying "solid as a rock" and realized while cutting rocks, very few go without flaws. Just the nature of the beast. Stabilize and enjoy or leave them with the pits. I rarely use polish and just go with finer and finer diamond to get a good shine. Doesn't show the pits as much. Fran
