Hi All,
Well, my son thought his ship would not have to go back out to sea so soon but you know how the Navy is... He got back from a westpac the end of February. He had been away for over 7 months and left when is daughter was 3 weeks old. He was home 7 months and now left 2 days ago for at least another 8 months. I got a call from my daughter in law today. She was crying so hard because a coyote jumped her fence and killed her cat that they have had for 8 years. All it left was the head in her yard. I am just glad my grand daughter wasn't out there! Their dog started going crazy looking out the back window so she let him out and he ran right to where the cats head was. Poor dog. that was his best friend and he must have seen it happen! They are in the San Diego hills and I guess that coyote was hungry and didn't care it was in housing. I hope the rest of the time he is gone goes much smoother that the start has!

Sorry to hear that Fran. Best wishes to your family.
Sounds like your DIL needs a shotgun.

I agree Curt but they don't like them used in military housing... She feels so guilty because she let the cat out but the cat likes to sit in the back yard from time to time. Just didn't know it would be it's last time.

I remember those days. Out of the entire first year that Cathy and I were married, I saw her for a total of 28 days between the works-ups and the deployment. It seemed like forever, but now I don't where the time went. Does she have family in the area? My in-laws were a BIG help, and probably one of the reasons that we've lasted so long. Sorry to hear about the cat.

Sorry to hear about it Fran. It's gotta be tough being away so long, especially missing the little ones growing up. Can they 'skype' out at sea? Even then it's still not the same. Sucks losing a pet too.. especially to a predator and then finding remains, how terrible! Hope things go smoother from here on.

She has my family out there about 3 hours away so they can visit sometimes but know one close by. They are able to make satellite calls from the ship and skype when it is not a black out period. Much nicer than the days we had way back when it was just letters and outrageous phone bills when my husband was in port! Squirtz was a nice old orange cat. Let my grand daughter lay all over him and loved to play with the dog. They got him while stationed in Iceland so he has traveled around with them for years. He was a good cat. Fran

Boy, I used to get so many coyote calls when I loved in Southern California. Had them stalking toddlers and even breaking through screen doors and taking puppies from the living room of a home. Coydogs ( crosses mainly between shepherds and coyotes were even worse as they were larger. They are good at climbing tall chain link fences too. Just too used to humans in California. In Texas, they get shot at so are much more shy and less of a problem. Sorry to hear about your pet.....Mel

Fran, sorry to hear about your son being deployed again so soon, and the loss of their pet. It may be because of the drought, but the coyotes around here have gotten extremely brazen in recent times. When their normal food source gets scarce, people's pets make easy pickings. My sister's cat was almost killed by a coyote a few years ago, almost lost an eye. I'm sure so many more just simply disappear, and so the owners never know what happened to them. I think I'd prefer that scenario, rather than finding evidence.
You said they lived in military housing... Are they up in the Tierrasanta area? That place is surrounding by open area on three sides, so lots of wildlife comes in. In Mission Valley, no more than five miles from there, on Labor Day morning, a buck crashed through a plate glass window and came into an IHOP, where people were eating breakfast. Luckily, no one was hurt. They think he got confused while looking for water, and when he saw his reflection in the window, he charged it (thinking it was another buck). A quick thinking employee was able to prop open the emergency exit, and the buck made it back outside on its own. Jean

Frane, I'm so sorry! When the boys were overseas, seemed one of the girls was always on the phone with something. It's a very hard life on the families and they do sacrifice just as the military member does. All you can do is listen and let them talk it out. Believe it or not, that is a huge help for them! Hang in there, Mom!

Thanks everyone. I will give her a call again in the morning and see how she is doing. They are in the mission valley area off 8 so not so many years ago, it was all empty there. So Jean, Spring Valley. I lived in Paradise valley and managed apartments while we were stationed there in the early 80's. What a shock to go back last year and see how it all had changed but still looks pretty good. Just more traffic and roads. Fran
