I've been debating the Covington small sphere machine. Anyone else using one ? I know it only does up to 1" spheres, but the larger machines cost quite a lot more ? Thanks

for $500 you can get a used machine that will make larger spheres. I paid $300 for mine and it came with a ton of extras.

A lot of commercial cutters use Manta Core Drills for pre forming. Most hobbyists use a slab saw and cut a cube. Then using an angled holder (Covington makes those too) cut the corners off. Then turn and cut those corners off. You end up with a whole lot of cuts removing corners. Then grind to as round as possible. Then it goes to the sphere machine. I'll have a lightly used Fireball machine for sale at Quartzsite with all new diamond accessory package if anyone is interested in the heaviest duty commercially made two head machine on the market. As far as the small sphere maker from Covington, I've sold a couple but never heard any feed back on how well they work. So, if you think sphere machines are too pricey, add in a slab saw and grinding wheel of some sort, SC grit and cups or (even better) diamond cups, angle holders, Velcro cups and resin diamond pads or other polish means. I'm probably forgetting some incidentals.

if 1" is acceptable, look for a marble mill. some homemade used to sell on ebay for about $100.
