I just got word from a reliable source (my wife) that Santa wants me to get a saw. With the chance of finding a used one in my area slim at best I am looking at new ones. What would be the best 14" new saw to get and should I get gravity or power feed? Stu

Stu: The Barranca 14" with power feed is one of the nicer saws I've seen. Looked at one at the San Antonio show and it appears to be a very well made and well thought out saw......Mel

I bought it new three months ago and it seems like it hasn't stopped since.

In my opinion go with anything but a Lortone lol. I had a new 14" Lortone Panther and hated that saw. For cutting larger, hard stones such as a Brazilian agate it cut way to fast and bound up. It's a terrible thing on lortones part to advertise this saw as the fastes cutting saw on the market. Slow is the best in the world of stone cutting!

I like the BD as well, but If space isn't an issue maybe a 18 instead of 14, because of the larger vice. I would agree, say no to lortone. The fix for a Panther is the auto feed motor from a regular 12 inch lortone to slow down the feed. I also don't recomend Covington.

Got no problem with the larger Covington's, as long as you ditch their God awful blade and opt for the 303 blade.

Don, their "Gold" blade worked so well you don't get the option anymore. Every saw above 10" gets an MK blade. They relabel them as their blades but they are MK.

I would recommend the new highland park saws. They are well built, and the owners have stood behind there product. I have been running mine now for two years, and have been pleased with it. I would never buy another Lortone saw again. The two happiest days I had with my 18" Lortone saw were the day that I bought it, and the day I sold it!!!! Robert
