I got this form thegemshop at a show last July. Yesterday I cut some preforms from a larger slab I got on ebay ( forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/index.cgi?board=creationtime&action=display&thread=57100 ) and now I am studying this one to lay out cuts. There is good red w/ white border on blue background, and the larger white parts are a nice mix of white and white-gray. But, I have not yet "seen" what to cut. --- OK, here are the cuts I see ---

I can see your point. Tough call on layout for this one. Lots going on to choose from

I feel your pain. I will dwell over some slabs for days-weeks months trying to figure out the best way to retain it's beauty in a cab that's not so big. Some slabs just go back in the "special" drawer to ponder another day.

If you rotate the pic 90 degrees clockwise, it kinda has a (wo)mans profile?

The busier the slab the tougher to cab. You could always do what Amber does. Drop it on a concrete floor and where it break it breaks. Makes me cringe whenever she does that.

That would be a tough one to decide where to cab. I wouldn't have the heart to drop a slab on the ground to see where it breaks, but everyone has a different technique to cabbing.

Wow... why cut it? It's GORGEOUS!!!!
I LOVE the 2 blue areas on the right... I can't see how you can cab them without making the cab gigantic enough to get the beige/ochre background too. That would be a slab I couldn't bring myself to mess with ever:).

IMHO you are wasting a lot of the slab. There are a bunch of free forms there. Go crazy with it. Jim

Wow, must have missed this earlier. That is a gorgeous material. Does it take a good polish or is in one of those satin finish type stones?.....Mel

Mel - I think high satin.
Jim - I don't have much use for a larger quantity of ugly freeforms. There may be more cuts after these four are taken, but the priority is to get these four. Cutting for quantity is very misguided IMO.

I couldn't get that liquid shine, so I guess it's more satin-ey.
Maybe Daniel can be more successful.

I picked out your cabs #2 and 4--then got overwhelmed. But those two are almost identical to what I chose--not sure if this is good or bad.

My philosophy is the same as yours. Buy slabs that have interesting scenes and cut interesting cabs. It's a waste of time to cut something that you don't find interesting. I sold off a lot of material that I wouldn't cab. Some of it was interesting but I already had cut multiple cabs that looked the same. What doesn't interest you might interest someone else.

Neat stuff, I think you figured out the best looking cabs from it.
