Last night I tried cutting some rainbow ob without much luck. I know you're supposed to cut parallel to the banding to get the rainbow effect, but is their such a thing as being too parallel? I mean if you cut dead parallel to the banding, will you get less of the rainbow effect than if you were slightly off?

I've always had the best luck cutting rainbow obsidian about 15 degrees off the flow lines.

I cut it perfectly parallel to the color bands and thicker than usual slabs are cut so you get a darker background. You will only get one color unless the bands are closely formed, then a high dome will show an eye with the other colors lying under the primary color. If it is a bright color it will show well this way regardless of the orientation. If you cut it at an angle to the color bands you do get to see all the colors but it only shows in one angle of orientation. If you rotate it slightly the color disappears. Bob

Bob I think this is my problem. I cut it 1/4 in thick and it's just about transparent. Plus the color on this cut is purple so unless there's a dark color behind it, you'd never know it was anything other than black.
