I am always amazed when people say they recover 60-80% of their oil. If I get 40% after filtering, I feel lucky. I think I have figured out why my recovery rate is so low. Maybe this is why I refer to her as "Puddin".

I am with you sister. I run my saw until the only thing in there is muck. The movement of the blade through the oil causes an area under the blade to be only oil (dirty oil) and all the heavy particles settle elsewhere. I never have to sharpen the blade. (ok, a couple of times), the blade just keeps cutting and cutting forever and it cuts so smooth that Helen thought I had polished the slabs I sent to her. In my opinion a clean saw is like a clean car. Just for looks. I am not preaching everyone. lol This is just my life experience. I have a feeling that you started a great thread and I would like to hear what everyone else has to say. Jim

I have never seen a saw with that much oil in it!! Don't you have a lot of splash.Normally you have enough coolant to cover the diamond of the blade 1/4 to 3/8 of an inch.Wow.

I know that you need to have the area around the blade clean.Tf the blade is picking up mud it makes uglier cuts.I slant my saw so that the mud slides down hill away from the blade pickup.I wish my saw had a sump w/a lift pan that i could rake the muck into.

James, did you read my post? My filthy saw cuts so smooth that Helen thought I polished the slabs. It does not cut any different clean or dirty. (really dirty)
Really nice rock Nancie Jim

Gonna try sumpn new for cleanin saw. Guy said he gets course nylon bags from a brewery supply, runs the oil through that to get rid of heavy stuff, then strains it through a paper bag. Later Clyde

Looks like I dressed a deer in there. It does sorta look like you were using it to dismember bodies...

well mine's pretty darn dirty but it might look even worse since its 20 degrees here and the oil gets thicker the colder it is. I do love this saw but the full table top don't allow it to drain the oil back into the tank well at all. this is mineral oil after maybe 40 cuts these pics are actually after I had scraped up some of the goop so its usually even worse. What the muck???
Heh.. sludge happens. I clean mine out once a year, and reclaim a decent amount thru filtering. One of these I'm a gonna try the shop vac sludge sucker thing I've seen on here.

Rock pudding.... yep. Mine looks like that too. I'd change it more often if it wasn't so expensive. It's about time for me to filter it again, I really dread the process though.

When the sludge gets to the point where it is no longer a liquid, but instead you could spread it with a knife - that's when the saw ABSOLUTELY needs to be cleaned and the oil changed - LOL! I had a little bit of new mineral oil for the next cleanup, but needed to get some more. While I was at Walmart the other day, I picked up a half gallon - 4 pints @ $1.48 each. At that price, a gallon would be less than $12, and no shipping! I was ready to explain to the cashier why I was buying a half gallon of "Lubricant Laxitive" but she didn't ask. Jean

AKA rock snot! Maybe you could trowel various colors of it (reds/yellows/blacks) onto poster board and create art? Jean
