The first time I saw rocks displayed like that was at a bonsai exhibition. The bonsai are planted in shallow containers set on little carved trays or stands. There were also a few rocks like those above on display too. They were also perched on the same kind of tray/stand, but each was carved to fit exactly around the base of the rock. It's a very cool effect. I was thinking of trying something like that myself, but sort of forgot about it. Thanks for the reminder!

Where in China were you? I spent ten months in Nanning in the south. Every single rock in China sits in one of those exact same bases in either black or ??brown. I have friends that make those exact same bases over and over again. I do not know how they stand it. I got sick of those bases in much less than ten months and they have been making those exact same bases for a thousand or two years. I tried to show than how a westerner might do it and they laughed at them. They also did not like my artwork except for my stone carvings. It is like they are looking through a tunnel and will not look to either side. Most of the people are very nice (especially in the artisan areas) and I had a lot of fun there.
You are lucky to have a friend there that will send stones to you. I worked only in soft stone then and brought home more than I need. It is obvious that the stones in your photos are natural and not fake because of the matrix. They are masters of copying (which we look at as a bad thing) which is the norm there.
Thanks for showing us. I have put up a few photos but have been pretty lazy about it. Jim

When I was in China I was in Hong Kong, Quigdao, Beijing , and Taiwan . These stones are located in Beijing . My plan is to start importing them a few a year .
