The DAC (Desert Advisory Committee) of the BLM will meet on Saturday, June 8, 2013 to discuss "West Mojave Route Designation". This is Access to our collecting areas! BLM needs to know we (rockhounds)care if access to our collecting sites are open or closed. Please attend if you can. Carriage Inn, 901 N. China Lake Blvd, Ridgecrest, CA, 93555. 8:00 A.M. - 4:30 P.M. Yes I know that is early to get to Ridgecrest but think of it as a fieldtrip! More info on BLM website www.blm.gov/caYou don't need to say anything if you don't want to- just by showing up it will let BLM know we DO care and want our recreation activity to be considered. Well, I can't make it up but I did email the BLM asking if they'd accept my email as part of the public comment section for the meeting record. Guess we'll find out.

So I attended this meeting yesterday. I learned that we have at least two committee members who are on our side. One committee member represents rock hounds and the other represents miners. There were some really good presentations and it seems as though this committee has really put in some work in getting all the existing routes recorded. Now we just have to wait and see what the BLM is going to do with the data this committee gathered. I wish there was a larger turn out of lapidary, mining and jewelry people. There was 4 people there from the rock world including myself. Of those 4 I was the only one to address the committee. Folks we really need more participation if you want our deserts and other lands to remain open for further exploration and gem collecting

They have fenced the desert in many areas. They are now placing fences on the ocean for marine recreationalists.
Mostly virtual fences, but don't get caught trespassing.
Soylent Green, it's people!
