I just got back from five days in the U.P. The purpose of the trip was not for rock hunting, but to visit my mom and sister in Marquette, and then another sister in the Keweenaw Peninsula. We stopped at a beach near Munising and picked up a bunch of beach rocks, mostly unakite. I snapped a few pictures into the water Later my sister and brother-in-law took us almost to the tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula. It was pretty remote. She was told that there were a lot of agates on the beach, but we only found a couple really tiny ones. I think these might be carnelian agates: At first I thought these might be agates and picked up quite a few. Then I talked myself out of them being agates and tossed most of them. They look a lot like septarians. I ran into a guy at a mine tailings pile who told me that they might be thunder eggs. I had no idea there were thunder eggs in Michigan. I haven't cut any yet. Here's a link he sent me: Superior Thunder EggsOther sides: I picked up a few of these for the tumbler. They were all over the place. My wife thinks they're rhyolite. This might be my favorite. Basalt, I think.

Awesome. Most of my family lives in the Escanaba area. I definitely use it as an excuse to go to copper country. I've never had good luck finding agates on the beach, I just stick to digging through the tailings dumps at the various mines. I really like that basalt, almost a perfect circle. Very cool.

Those are some cool finds Rob. Is that three little lakers in the third picture that didn't get mentioned? I have never heard of those thunder eggs before but yours sure do look like the ones in that link. Hopefully they have a surprise waiting inside for you and if so next time you will know not to toss them back.

Yep, those are lakers. My son found all three. He spent most of his time sitting down in a spot and sorting through tiny rocks. The rocks on the beach were sorted by size by the waves. I walked around the larger rocks, while Bryan sat in a row of small ones.
