I just recently sold 2 items on eBay. First time selling on eBay. The first item The Buy It Now was $225. It sold fast. When I was listing the item I used the calculator method to figure out what my fee would be and it came up to 10%. But in paypal it is showing that available amount is 215.92. Which comes out to a little under 3.9%. How come it is lower than 10%.
The second item was the same situation. Fee is much lower than the 10% they advertised.
Also I thought that paypal charged 3% too. Stuff has me all confused.

eBay bills you monthly - separately from PayPal.

Go to 'myebay' and then view 'account'.
Your initial excitement will be quickly crucified.
I have an online friend that just started ebay, sold like 2k worth of stuff and was bragging about how she got 5000 free listings making the mistake that it was totally free and no fees were involved. Problem was she already spent the money and now has to sell almost $250 worth of stuff to pay for it. Told her best thing to do is pay fees immediately if you're not good at budgeting.
No one on ebay is getting rich, not us small fry anyhow. I've been there since the beanie baby days and am pretty sick of their crap including the Mcdonald's like customer service they expect us to give everyone.

ok now it makes sense. In paypal when it says fees, I didnt know that it only shows just paypal fees and not eBay also. Thanks for clearing that up.

Yeah, E-bay has gotten pretty expensive and complicated now. I had a huge antique blade collection to sell and had planned on going E-Bay as I had sold my bayonet collection that way. By the time I figured what my fees would be ( Pay Pal, pictures, posting fees, sales fees etc.) I decided to just wholesale the entire collection to one guy I knew. Less trouble, no fees, way less time etc.
I might also add that the final straw for me was the fact that E-Bay does not follow your sales instructions. I put on every auction " Sells to US buyers only". This because there are a lot of international regulations regarding blades that are difficult to deal with and also language difficulties. E-Bay repeatedly sold my blades to a high bidder in a foreign country creating massive amounts of work for me and making me fill out customs forms, translate communications, calculate all kinds of weird international postage, figure out how to get paid etc. Way too much trouble when I specified I sell to US bidders only. E-Bay should have a program to exclude international bids when so requested.....Mel

Mel, you can set up your ebay auctions to block overseas bids and sell to US buyers only, or allow only certain foreign countries. I used to set up all my auctions that way and if an individual messaged me I could give them an exception to allow them to bid after we agreed on my terms regarding shipping and duties.

Lee, I thought I had set up all my auctions that way. E-bay must have changed their policy then because e-bay reps and I had a big long discussion on this topic and they basically told me tough luck and the only thing I could do is contact each bidder separately and tell them to retract their bid as I would not sell to them. Basically this is impossible to do if the bidding closed with snipe bids which it almost always did. I'd think a US bidder was winning and after the bidding closed, find out someone in Lower Boogervania was the winner and I was left to deal with the BS.....Mel

Go into "My ebay" under the account tab and click on site preferences, then under seller preferences choose "buyer requirements". Then click Edit and make sure the box is checked for blocking bids from "Buyers in locations to which I don't ship".
You also have to make sure you choose US only when you list each auction. I know it's a pain but it is still possible to block them. There are still several other reasons that I no longer sell on ebay.

If you don't want to sell internationally, it is imperative to list that in your write-up, (will NOT ship out of the United States). Have had no problem with that since. Just because you do not check a box on Ebay, does not mean that they won't check it for you.

RE: international orders? I just open a case and offer full refund, and refuse to ship. They always agree to the deal and take their money back. I have checked the no international orders, but they get around it somehow.
FWIW: I quite selling on ebay too. Too much work for too little reward.

Back when the fees were just 2-3% it was ok, but now at 10% plus paypal gouging fee, you might lose close to 20%. Still selling a few things on ebay to help fund the rock habit.
