I don't know how I got talked into this! The Historical Society here is pretty active, and to generate interest in the local small town museum they try to schedule interesting sh*t. Like quilts, genealogy, an antique appraiser, and ice cream socials...you get my drift. Somehow, back in the winter, I agreed to do a rock thing! And now it is time. I have a great book with info on the Mohs scale so I will bring that and my toilet lid (it's my only porcelain! Hush up!) and rocks of different hardness. I have contacted some folks here on RTH, working on getting some geodes and maybe some way to crack 'em. I hear a plumber's tool works well but I need to practice? I have one good glow rock, and the museum has a little room with an ancient hand-held heavy light and a small collection. Working on that, any ideas? I will feature some pure mineral samples from a collection handed down from my dad, some fossils and arrowheads the family has collected, and some treasures from my trip to Romania 2 years ago. I plan to charge a small fee for the geodes and cracking if I can make it work and donate proceeds back to the museum. Any other ideas out there? Oh, yes, I will have jewelry, the finished product. And I am going to haul my tumblers there, with samples of grit and stages of tumbling. If you are interested in letting me beg, borrow or steal ideas and/or items, or pay for them, please give me a call. I am gonna take a chance here and put out my number. Thanks! You can reach me on my cell at 308-882-6030. Leave a message or text me. I work a lot at several jobs and sometimes I cannot answer at the moment. Thanks, people! K

Karen. Too broad. From Geology to jewelry, with a side of fossils and/or geode cracking. plus tumbling equipment?
best to focus. just geodes. or just "properties of minerals, and what is a rock?", or just "popular fossil materials in lapidary" or even, "seeing pictures in rocks". or just "tumbling fun for family"
more narrow, focused, fun.
educational components (signage, handouts, photos) more clearly mapped out and prepared. any activity or demo practiced, planned, staffed.
what is your lead time? budget? resources (e,g., cases, tables, tools)?

I have people of all ages. And limited examples. I am bringing my tumblers and examples of stages, the museum has a room with glowy rocks already and I will add to that. Cool rocks that people can pick up and look at, some info and pix. That will take about an hour....If they want to get more scientific, they can talk to my co-presenter, who is a former science teacher and knows all the names and if they are igneous, metamorphic or sedimentary. I plan to learn a few things from that amazing lady! The whole point of this is to bring people under 60 to the museum, so I am making it as fun as possible. Everybody will get a free rock. I have people who will crack the geodes safely and it will just be the usual luck of the draw. I think no matter what is inside, I can create some excitement. Hey, no one has seen the inside of that rock for how many millions of years? How cool is that? Or they can have one of my tumbled rocks, or whatever else I can come up with. It is a casual thing over the course of an afternoon. I am not teaching so much as showing with fun and enthusiasm. I have no idea what percent will be kids; the object here is to get more of them. I asked about museum attendance, and it goes anywhere from 15 to 85? Hard to plan I will have some finished jewelry pieces, just to show what you can do with cool rocks besides put 'em in your pocket. And that's my plan. Not much of one, right? k

I have rainbow obsidian, fun rocks and glowy geodes coming my way. Thanks so much, Tony and Ozzy! Once again, RTH people go over and above. I tried to pay over and above shipping, but it was hard!!! IOU some homemade jerky/nebraska beef. You guys are my heroes. In a rainbow, glowy, sparkly (yet non-Barbie) rock kinda way. Just sayin. Thanks again! k
