I took my daughter out to an old mining town last night called Ophir. Did a little hounding, but I wasn't really sure what was BLM and if there were Private Claims, so I only picked up a few small things of pyrite and epidote near the road, so they weren't the greatest of samples. Anyone ever been out there? I would love to go back and look for better specimens, but don't want to tread on private property.

Best to talk to the folks at the BLM, and get one of their maps of the area. They'll be able to tell you if any of the area is under claim, or is sensitive BLM land. Also, just because a mine isn't being actively worked, doesn't mean it's not under claim. To keep a claim open, all the claim holders have to do is X number of dollars worth of work per year. That can be as simple as clearing a little brush and doing minimum maintenance on a trail.

What an amazingly simple but perfect answer! Thank you. There is something going on with the mines, but its more of a small town tourist type thing. Doubt they do any real mining anymore, but the area is really well maintained.
