Bill said, "We are too full of self-loathing to do anything about it". I'd like to hear more about this. I have no self-loathing, nor am I aware of anyone in Congress to have self-loathing.
You mean if Congress had no self loathing, we'd be more willing to send US kids to die while killing people in Afghanistan? That we should have more will to make people who also hate the Taliban hate us more from the inevitable 'collateral damage'?
Or are you saying that we should do something else? What?
And you know that everything the Taliban stands for and believes anger WOMEN more than men. You pointed out one of them, that little girl would like to be a teacher, and that under the Taliban, odds are good that she never will. That's terrible, and any thinking person, particularly women, would be angered by that thought.
Theoretically, everyone cares enough about everyone else to respect their rights to self-determination about their own future, clothing, behavior, etc etc. We know that isn't true in the world. That isn't even true in this country.
We judge people by the color of skin, by who they choose to love, by how much income they make, by their weight, by their religion (who likes muslims here? Raise your hand), by their appearance... and that only skims the surface of stereotypes. That's in the US, reputedly the land of the 'free'.
Yet we are free to throw stones at an ancient culture, the Afghans, that we ONLY KNOW OF through biased news reports and paid for articles, not because a single one of us spent a single moment with a single person who lives there. We can judge them all through hearsay and filtered and self-serving news.
EVERYONE not extremist are outraged by their laws and behavior based on what you have written. Despite that Sharia law is based on Old Testament Law, the same 'good book' that you believe in and must accept if you are a Christian. Yet you LOATHE those who follow that law you profess to believe in. How does that work?
The hypocrisy aside, the obvious question becomes... what can we do about it? If you hear your neighbor threatening his wife, while she cries and screams, you can call the police. Who can that little Afghan girl call? The US military?
Are we prepared to double our deficit yet again to give her the right to teach?
Are we prepared for our sons to die to give her the right to teach?
Would YOU die to give her the right to teach?
Because if you are not, you have no right to ask someone else to. We know the answer, even if we don't like it.
Would you prefer a different answer? What would it be?
