I was reading this post forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/thread/61432/interesting-site by milto and went to the site mentioned. I was ready to email the guy and say hi from Virginia Beach, USA when I stopped myself. The thought police got to me. I remembered that the NSA reads and/or scrutinizes every email leaving the US to another country. (And, no, I did not save the link from where I read that, but I did read it... and from a reputable source.) Yes, it would be a harmless email, but no doubt one that might land me on some list- I mean Iran??? Come on, I'm sure they are interested in that. A legitimate question- If someone in Iran has a hotmail account, does it still go to Iran. I'm thinking, yes.

wait.. Tela.... wait....
Your free speech was chilled, because of worries the NSA will notice an email you send, saying "hi" to a fellow rockhound in Iran?
Yes...
This is proof positive true freedom is a distant memory. We need Ken White all over this one.
I can totally see why you would not send that email.
To answer your question, for the reader to see it, the bits that make up your email will have to go from hotmail servers to his computer in Iran.

Good question that made me wonder too. If Iran can get internet, I can't see why they can't see email unless they don't get email service. However, the NSA question is a separate question. So after thinking about it, why not email the NSA and ASK them if you are allowed to email an iranian rock collector to discuss rocks or even share rocks? I'm thinking that you cannot ship packages to or from Iran, because of the boycott... (think Cuban cigars in the 1970s). But I'd write the NSA directly and ask: www.nsa.gov/public_info/contacts/index.shtml#iaWhat I'd be more concerned about is not what the NSA will do to you (if they READ your email, so what? you are talking about rocks)... it's what Iran will do to him. If THEY intercept the email, they may pick the innocent man up for torture as an American spy. That's what you don't want to happen.

Just realized that the page he's got has a 'comment' section Tela. You don't need to email him to use the 'comments'. Based on the ads on his blog, the blog site is 'freeservers', and this is their 'Terms of Service': www.freeservers.com/terms-of-service.htmFrom the address at the bottom of the above page, they are based in the USA, California.... so this seems to imply that HE has open internet access, and that should you post on his Comments, you are simply posting to another American blog as a commenter. There's nothing illegal about sending an email to anyone you want about non-political/military subjects. Nothing will happen to you. The problem is what could happen to the person you write to if they live in a petty dictatorship. Iran is a theocracy, who knows what they consider 'dangerous'. Maybe talking to an infidel in private is dangerous. Public comments about rocks probably wouldn't fit in that category.

I had the same knee jerk. What I would like is a computer that could be set up separately just to send one email over and over and over a million times a minute to see if I could clog the NSA's pipes. Then fly it in an unmanned aircraft that has enough fuel to fly for a month so that the only way they could stop it is to shoot it down. I am a bit of a dreamer but if you are going to dream, dream big.
And I agree, it is so efin sad. Man has been fighting man since the beginning of time. I think it is time to put only women in charge. Jim

You could be accused of weapons trading. Rocks are a deadly weapon in the Muslim world.

My whole point to this post is like @shotgunner said. We are losing our freedoms by the day and we barely recognize it. There was a time when I wouldn't have thought twice to email another person around the world from me. My dad was retired Navy. I have always enjoyed communicating with people around the world. Sometimes via shortwave, sometime via mail and recently via email. No more. Wouldn't be prudent. I'm already on enough of their lists. helens I know you were trying to be a problem solver and I appreciate that, but the oneness shouldn't be on me to email the NSA and get "permission" to email the guy. I shouldn't be presumed guilty of something before I have done anything.

I shouldn't be presumed guilty of something before I have done anything. Asking the NSA was a curiosity question, I have no idea if they'd mind or not if you write about rocks. However, you do realize that Iran is on the list of 'sanctioned nations' right? That means embargo, nothing in or out. Had Mitt Romney been elected President, we would right now be at war with them. To compare your freedoms, would the Gov't care if you wrote to someone in the USSR while Reagan was President? Yes. Cuba during JFK's Admin? Yes. North Vietnam under Nixon's Admin? Yes. Jane Fonda did that, why are some people still mad at her? You won't get arrested, she didn't either and she was visiting military installations in North Vietnam. That's freedom. Doesn't mean they aren't going to read what you say to them. Germany under Hitler? Yes. It's a fact of life that anyone writing to an 'enemy' country would come under scrutiny, this isn't Obama or 'losing freedom'. Doesn't mean you can't do it. But I'd bet the guy won't get to see it, Iran has blacked out internet from the US from my understanding. Their OWN citizens can't see what you write, but the US will let you write and send it. As for the are you watched, I suggested you ask, because I don't know, but I'd be surprised that you didn't get watched after writing to an enemy country. It's been this way for 200 years here, why would this be surprising? What would the colonials do to you if you were writing to the British? I believe that's the $.50 solution for what Colonials would call 'collusion with the enemy', even if you were just sharing food recipes. They were much less tolerant than we are today. Your dad was in the Navy, he might have told you what they did to French people who simply agreed to sell to Germans in France during the Occupation, after the French regained their nation. They were called collaborators, shorn of hair, and paraded around town. It's how much more global we have become that we can even think badly of OUR government because they don't arrest us immediately for attempting to or making contact with someone in an enemy nation today. In the past, you'd not be upset, you'd be in jail or dead. I'd say we are nicer about it than we used to be.

To the other countries? True we have lost our resolve. But that is off topic. The topic is the rights of US citizens. To American citizens? This origin of this thread is proof positive that your statement does not apply to US citizens.

Would Tela have asked this question if she wanted to write a rock hound in Europe? Africa? Asia? Isreal? No.
So what right did we lose again? The right we've always had to talk to enemies of the USA? Really? Can you tell me when we had that right to lose it now?
