Ok... those look gross... those eels look like a combo of white maggots and eyeballs. Good grief.

As a intensive traveler of Africa and Asia in the 80's and early 90's, I smile and better keep out of this topic. Ok KK, it looks like this is a contest. Maybe we should enter so we can show them what really really gross can be. I will go first. In China they eat human placenta. I think I win. no no no no no no no I did not eat it. I am 100% sure that I did not eat it. Jim

Still pretty standard, but you are right, hard to get when you want one; as the hospitals sell them wholesale these days to local and oversea labs.
When you think about it, why do animals eat it? So, why not we too?

I've heard of that... sounds gross, but that's not restaurant food. Google images of goat's head soup... BIG eyeballs looking at you while you eat... gaag...
I still think giant maggots with eyes are grosser for some reason:(.

Ya, but Jim, I have eaten the Angulas several times. The way the Spanish prepare them, they're good. Especially when washed down with a little good Spanish wine.

I've heard of that... sounds gross, but that's not restaurant food. . Helen; Home-cooking for that is rare (always has been). It became big news a few years ago (about 20 years or so ago), because someone squealed on the restaurants who had the right connections (most likely someone who could still not perform properly after eating that stuff).

Kurt... I had heard that it was used for helping with postpartum nutrition... not an aphrodisiac? How would placenta provide aphrodisiac? Oh yuck, too early in the morning to think about gross food!!! LOL!

I am really surprised that some people here don't find it totally disgusting. Was it human placenta Don? Jim

Nope. It's real baby eels cooked in a sauce.
For me at least, the grosest thing has to be an over easy egg, where the egg white is still runny. Looks like snot running out of the egg.

The idea was to help restore some of the nutrients that were being lost such as iron. Placenta is used in Chinese medicine as well and is an ingredient in some cosmetics. If people really think about what they eat half the time though then they probably would starve to death. For example, think about how much urea is in the blood of a steak. Might as well wash it all down with a cup of cow urine. I learned back in high school about all the bugs in chocolate, especially cockroaches. Beer is clarified using fish guts (isinglass)...........

I still think giant maggots with eyes are grosser for some reason:(. When I was in Iceland one of their delicacies was whole sheep's head. The thought of trying to eat something looking back at me was not very appealing so I did not try it. But I did have the sheep's head cheese preserved in sour whey. Wasn't too impressed in its raw form. But fired in butter with some herbs then put between two slices of bread really improved it a lot.

I knew I read about women eating their own placentas after birth! Still sounds gross. Gaah. And now that I think about it, you are 100% right about cosmetics... placentas are where the best collagen comes from for facial injections. That and corpse fat (do not ask me where they get this from, but it is directly injected into women's wrinkles to plump). Actually, there are FDA guidelines for how much rat poop per lb can be detected in processed peanut butter for children. Apparently, rats like pooping in stored peanuts, so there's no way to get it all out. It's just how much of it is removed prior to processing. Don't have to go far from home to find gross things to eat:).

Along the same lines, do you know what the majority of plasma collected from plasma banks is used for? It is sold to cosmetic manufacturers.

Plasma? I can't think of a use for that... it's got roughly the same texture as glycerin if you need water soluble (which you never do for creams since you are emulsifying everything anyway), and if you don't, you can use a lot of oil subs... only thing in plasma left is proteins, and you can get very similar proteins from oils. Hrm. What are they doing with plasma, especially considering the relatively short shelf life? Maybe as a thinner for collagen injections? But there would be no need for 'majority' of sales.

I believe they are using it for the albumin protein, which is not going to be found in plant oils.
