Obama, Congress and their unemployment extensions
parfive, this time I say nothing. I'll let the businessman speak for himself.
I am a small Contractor located right here in Riverside. I have posted ads at many places and on numerous sites trying to seek out employees. I receive over 20 replies and resumes a day. Out of those 20 or so I hand pick about 1-2 that are even semi coherent (literally) to set up interviews. I call them, they seem eager and we set up an agreed upon time to meet at my shop. It is now Thursday night and I have yet to have even one applicant show up for their interview this entire week!
The reason we are seeking workers is because we are busy, yet I take time out of my work day to accommodate the applicants available time for an interview (like I have nothing better to do myself) and I get back to my office and sit. No one shows up after I have just burned 2 -3 hours waiting, I call them and of course it goes to voice mail, I leave a polite message stating that punctuality is important in the world of business and wish them the best of luck in their future en devours, which is now no longer possible with my Company.
All these people are wanting to do is fill in their unemployment forms showing that they are still actively seeking employment, put down my name, my address, my Company's name and the time of their "interview" and send it on back to the government to once again sit on the couch, play video games and collect their unemployment checks. I have been in business for over 10 years and I have yet to be contacted by the Government to verify any employment attempts.
Hell, why not? Government keeps extending this so people continue to "ride the wave" of free money while us "working people" continue to carry the load.
I am not offering out chicken feed either. How does $15 an hour to start a full time job for an apprentice plus paid holidays plus 100% paid PPO medical insurance sound? Yet the lure of "free" money and all the free time in the world is more attractive to them I guess.
So at this point what is a small business Owner to do? I have too much work for my current employees to complete and it is not fair to pressure them any harder to increase their production yet it is impossible these days to find anybody to even show up to an interview let alone actually want to work for their money.
Any ideas? because I am at a crossroads here, do I shrink my company back down, let down Customers and not try to grow and prosper? I see no other choice do to lack of interest in people wanting to work at the career I am offering.
