I will be arriving in Phoenix at the end of November and will have a couple of days to fill in some time. I figure I could do some rockhounding out there since it wont be 150 degrees! Anyone have any suggestions of some good places? I have a few restrictions though: - Im flying in and will be limited on what I can bring back, but I figure I will just ship whatever I find in a flat rate back home, so whatever I find needs to be able to fit into a flat rate.
- I would prefer not to travel outside of Phoenix for more than 2-3 hours
- I will not have any equipment, maybe I can pick up a trowel or something small while Im there, but I just don't have the option to bring tools, so whatever I find will need to be on the surface.
- I will be in a small rental car (Nissan Versa), so I would need to get somewhere that doesn't require impossible roads.

4th of July butte might be a good possibility - about 1.50 hours south west of Phoenix. Easy access into the general area - 20 miles out on a well-maintained gravel road then you can hike in to the better collection areas. I went out there about seven years ago in a rented PT Cruiser and took it on some rough side roads and through a couple of washes. Lucky my dumb-ass didn't get stuck LOL. I would have loved to see the look on the face of the person who had to wash that thing when I brought it back hahaha.
