Last weekend my bride and my youngest son took off for an excursion into the desert - it wasn't a long trip but we had a blast and found lots of nice rocks to play with.
Spent the majority of Saturday crawling around desert dirt roads looking for pretty rocks.
The family :-)
Found places way off the beaten path (far from the rockhounding books) where the ground was just littered with agates.
Some desert scenery
My son's real reason for wanting to come :-)
Found an excellent spot to camp - protected on three sides by hills - not too much wind but it was a great spot if there had been.
Priorities - beer, rocks, and guns :-)
So many agates around our camp we had a few of them as part of our fire ring.
Ahh... life is good.
Camp from on top of the hill behind us.
Coffee in hand, searching for nice agates the next morning.
I've only just started cutting a few of our finds.
Unknown jasper/agate - I love how the red plumy area is two different colors on either side of the healed fracture.
Found about a 20lb boulder of a low quality plume agate - this is a cab from a corner I knocked off of it.
Found a few yellow/red mosses and plumes - small but pretty in an ugly/brown/mustard kind of way haha.
Sunday morning we broke camp and headed down to the Fallon area and Wonderstone Mountain. We were all tired and didn't end up spending a lot of time here but collected about a milk crate of smaller pieces that look hard and polishable.
Giant piles of broken rocks from years and years of active hounding on the mountain made of wonderstone.
And the last shot of the trip as we left Wonderstone Mountain ... looking off to the east towards green mountain of Gemtrails of Nevada fame.
Such a beautiful place the desert is... we are ready to go back already :-)
