This seems to be a perpetual problem for rock hounds. I'll be out in the field, find a deposit of lapidary material and later come to find out that the area is an active claim. Usually there's no marker or indication of the claim's existence out in the field; sometimes you'll come a cross an old pit where work had been done at one time but there doesn't seem to be any way to know if there is a current claim on the mineral rights. It is my understanding that active claims must be marked with a copy of the claim paperwork and boundary markers. I seldom ever find anything like this. it would be useful to have a map detailing active claims, size, and mineral right so these places can be avoided when prospecting new rock hounding locations. Anyone know where you can get details on active claims on BLM, forest service, etc land?

Active claims should have markers and all that. The BLM LR2000 program will show you claims, but I've been told it's a year or two out of date. I've played with it just enough to get confused, but I'm confused most of the time anyhow. All claims will be on file with your county recorder. Your local BLM office may or may not be of help. If you can search by township and range, or lat/long it should simplify things.

In Arizona, if it is not marked with a marker, must have copy of claim paper in it, then it is fair game! Most used here is white pvc pipes. Sheri
