I am putting this on the board because I am the kind of person who does what she says she will do. This will help me stay my course. I have been wirewrapping since about 1999. I have always wanted to do proper metalsmithing. My wire wrapping is actually inspired by smithy work. So, over the years I have picked up a tool here and there. I have done some small soldering and fusing. But, I have just made the commitment to do some bigger silver solder work. I ordered the rest of the tools that I needed and I have a few DVDs. I could find no classes in my area, so this will be semi informed trial and error. I am learning from this thread, as well. My supplies aren't in, yet, but I have some wire and solder to start some filigree with. Interestingly, while reading this forum, I have discovered that both Cathy ( talkingstones) and I are starting our journeys at the same time. We have agreed to post some of our projects. This is a big leap for me. I'm both scared and excited at the same time. Thanks for being such a great group and for sharing on this great board.

There are no beginner experts and NO ONE knows it all.
a baby learns how to roll over, then to inch forward and back. Finally how to get on hands and knees and rock back and forth. To crawl and then to stand.
That is about where our "experts" are today, but they imagine themselves so much further along than they really are.
Be willing to take that next step then soar away!

Judging from your wraping, I'm sure you have nothing to worry about.

Looking forward to your soon-to-be creations! (I've been lurking 'round these parts a bit more lately for tips and ideas on using my first flat lap machine so it's comforting to see other folks trying new things.)

I'm sure the artistic eye and temperament that are clearly shown in your cabs and wraps will be greatly invigorated by your work with metals. I'm sure your best is yet to come.

You will do just great Tela. Yep there is a learning curve just like everything else. Expect a few screwups but for the most part things went pretty well for me. I lack in 2 departments, one is imagination, you will have no problems with that and the second is soldering. It takes some time to get the hang of it. Its coming along for me but I still have issues. It will get better with patience.
Good luck and I know you will do great!!!!!!!

Tela and Cathy, I'm in too! I have only had some instruction but I want to get to it so I am going to make that a priority in 2014 as well. Thanks for the motivation!

Thank you very much for the kind comments. I hope I can live up to eveyone's expectations.... no pressure, really. herchenx The more the merrier, it will be fun. talkingstones I figure a little nudging can't hurt. LOL!!! I'm really excited to see what you are doing. If you take to this like you did to intarsias, I'll have a togh act to follow. aimeesrockworks Welcome aboard!!! If you want encouragement you have come to the right place. You should post more and come in from the shadows. Well, I didn't find the little booklet on filigree, despite tearing the house apart, so I am starting with a fancy chain. That'll teach me a few things. I am starting with copper, too. It is easier for me. I got all the components done and round one of soldering. Links in the pickle. I only have one hardness of copper solder, so the third hands that DH got me for Christmas will help to keep the heat away from the first solder joints. I'll probably be able to post the finished piece tomorrow.

I think, and that's think, that there is only one hardness. For copper solder

Some things are pretty hard to actually learn by reading and watching videos.Silver soldering is no exception,,,,,, You can read and watch videos as long as you like on how to ice skate and you WILL fall a few times until you get the hang of it! It's those who take there lumps, wipe the snow off their butts and try to skate again, who will succeed! For those who are in warm climates,,,go put on a pair of roller skates! LOL I can't tell you how many times I've failed at what I attempt but between a VERY thick/hard head and a WELL cushioned butt,,,I've ALWAYS got up and dusted the snow off of it! We're all here to help each other so just ask away,,,,you'll have to dust your own butts off though! connrock
