Good morning everyone.
I live in Canada, and have a business trip planned for mid month in March to Las Vegas Nevada.
I'm absolutely not familiar with what natural glories can be found around that big city, but I am convinced they are plentiful. We have most of the day free on Sunday March 16th before catching our flight at 11.30pm back to Toronto, and am wondering if there are places we can travel to for rock. I would love to spend the day seeking what I love.
Any help, anyone can offer would be appreciated. I don't travel often at all, and would love to take advantage of this time away to collect something (anything) memorable.
Thank you all in advance.
Mary

There is some green jasper found outside of vegas tho you have to dig for it. its back towards California. Also Shotgunner should be able to tell you about that area as he and others roam out that way in Cali which is not far from there.

Thank you jollyrockhound, I hope Shotgunner trips over this thread. I will keep googling in the meantime.

as @shotgunner 's unofficial and unauthorized spokesperson I will personally stick out my foot and cause him to trip over this thread.
Seriously though how far do you think you would be able to day trip from Vegas? If you had the means to get up early and day-trip 2-3 hours north in Nevada there's literally dozens of hunting areas to be had. I highly recommend the Rockhounding Nevada book if you don't already have it.

I will be there as well and my friend is coming down from Alberta and we will be going out to do some mining. There is not a whole lo exciting around here. I can show you where there is some nice red selenite close by and rootbeer calcite. There is some crinoid fossils in the area as well as some agate if I recall right out by Anniversary Narrows. Supposed to be purple agate out that way as well but I would have to ask where. I have found some botryoidal garnets out here, gray, heavily microfractured obsidian small pieces of black agate and lots of chalcedony. Someone also offered to show me around the Lake Havasu area where there is also purple agate and some other interesting stuff. Other day trips include down by Kingman where you can look for fire agate. Will be going North of Vegas when my friend gets here for some other stuff I am putting claims on. Anything in particular that you are interested in?

Sounds like you are referring to the "Henderson jade" from the Three Kid's Mine. It is in the rick collecting books, but last time I was out there the mine was completely closed citing something about contamination. Not sure if the no trespassing signs were ever taken down.

The Henderson jade is nice looking stuff but difficult to find there from what I have heard from several people. And I am still not sure if the area is even open. I tried gong out there about 5 years ago and the site was completely closed with no trespassing signs everywhere. I will try to get pics when I go up there.

I don't have a specific thing I am looking for, but I'd love to try for some agate. I have never had the chance to 'rock hound' as I live in a city, and work and have a family......but would LOVE to get out somewhere. My conference finishes up on Sunday morning just before noon, and my flight is leaving just before midnight. Is that enough time to get out? Oh and I have no means to get around.... I don't want to be a burden on your generosity, but I really have no clue what I am looking for or what area I am looking in, or how much such a day trip would cost. Good morning everyone. There is some agate around here, but what I have found has mainly been small pieces of black agate close by. I will ask at the next gem club meeting where the purple agate is at by Lake Mead. I don't think it is that far from Vegas. Most of the places I go to collect are generally a few hours from here. But that can still be done in a day trip with plenty of time to collect.
