I have been blessed with the felicity of a trip to Japan in July. We will be in Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan for a few days working our way south to Tokyo. Can you say Bullet Train! woot!
Rockhounding is only a possibility. A fishing trip is more likely. Maybe snorkeling for 蛸.
Rockshops are a given.
Any assistance is deeply appreciated. Do we have any Japanese members? 我々はすべての日本のメンバーを持っていますか?
We are taking a tour with our sushi-man as tour guide!
そしてあなたに感謝してください。
We'll be there for the fourth of July. Do they have the fourth of July in Japan?

Congrats on your upcoming, highly anticipated trip, Scott. Besides the rocks, I'm thinking of all the Japanese cuisine that you will get to sample. Oh, and the beer...
I have a friend in the prospecting club that is from Japan. Her dad was a geologist, and she was bit by the rock bug when she was only a few years old. She has lived in the states for a long time now, but I'll pick her brain about rocks and such. Her sister still lives there.

Japan is amazing. I lived in Tokyo for 4 years and will be moving back next year. The Mrs. is Japanese, from Akita.
You are going to have an awesome time Shotgun. You are going to eat and drink till you fall over! The food is amazing and the beer is never ending. The onsen are to die for. The nature is pristine. Just stay away from Fukushima.
As far as rocks go, I'll ask my wife if there are any rock shops in or near Sapporo. Her hometown, Kazuno, has 2 large mines, Kosaka and Osarizawa. The latter is a copper/gold mine owned by Mitsubishi with a dark history. They imprisoned WWII soldiers there and were brutally forced to mine.
Japan is one of the only places in the world that produces Benitoite, albeit very small.
I'll do a little digging for you. There is an ongoing mineral show as well.
