So my brother is on an extended vacation in SoCal at the moment and for a couple of days is in the Big Bear Lake area. He would really like to do a little rockhounding while there. Can anyone give me some details on a location or two that a real beginner can go collecting near that area?
Appreciate any advice!
Thanks
~Roland

Lavic siding is a good place, and the south cady.
Look on the Anaheim searcher Web page, we are going that way soon.

Lapis and ruby are in that area. Ruby's are easy to get , but the lapis is very tough climb up the mountain.

in my experience the rubys up there are not gem quality. most of what you will find is sapphire. its still a nice hike and a fun trip.

I can get you into the canyon where the ruby/sapphire/corundum and lapis are. The lapis is all float found in the river now. There is a guy making his living hounding the lapis and selling by the gram! I haven't found the corundums yet.
If you drop down from the north side of Big Bear you have the entire Mojave desert at your disposal. I can put you into some nice marbles and depending on your schedule and desires tons of other stuff.

Thanks so much folks! Due to my move to Colorado the Cali vacation was cut short. But now I know who to look up on my next excursion out West!
Peace, Roland
