Just wanted to let everyone know, the famous Clear Creek is open after a 6 year closure by the EPA. I was up at the Cal State Gem mine and they told me. Afterwards I drove up to clear creek and went back in a few miles. Oooohhhh the goodies up there! Plasma agate galore! Before you go I heard you need a special permit which lasts 7 days. You can go to the Hollister BLM site for more info. www.blm.gov/ca/st/en/fo/hollister.html

Found about 50lbs of what looks like quality plasma agate and left a lot for the next guy. Everyone who enters the prior closure area - the asbestos study area past Oak Flats campground - needs a separate permit per day per person. If you're staying two days you need two permits. The yearly limit that a single person is allowed in the asbestos zone is five days. The rangers were out in force this weekend handing out tickets to off-road motorcyclists who weren't following the new strict rules on riding in the area.

Thanks for the update Tommy. Did you just pay the $5 fee at the entrance or did you get a special permit?
You pretty much have to go past Oak Flats for the good material.

Yes when we came in Sat morning the Rangers had the road blocked collecting fees at the administration yard. There's also an iron-ranger box setup there to drop money in.
Agreed on the material - we went as far in as we dared to go in my wife's 4 - runner and it just kept getting better and better.
