Anybody ever use one of these? I have one I bought in Oct last year. I have had it attached to my propane tank almost since then but have never used it. I have a class coming up next week so I finally got brave enough to light it but first I tested it for leaks. Good thing I did because it leaks real bad where the handle connects into the hose. I checked around on the net for some information on what to do & found a real good tutorial on how to test for leaks & a cure for it. However, I was not successful in totally stopping the leaking. Sooooooo, needless to say that torch did not get lit. I called the place that shipped it to me which just happens to be in Miami & they are going to ship me a new one, as soon as they get them in sometime next week. That won't be in time for me to use in the class so I will resort to the butane. Guess I should have checked it out sooner!!!!!!!

are they compression fittings or pipe fittings? Nevermind, I googled it and they are compression fittings, teflon tape only works with pipe fittings. if it leaks the mating surfaces are scratched or faulty (chinese) manufacturing on the fittings. if you disassemble it for transport you want to protect the mating surfaces from scratching.

Donnie,
I just bought one of these and you are going to love it once you get this little problem fixed. I looked at mine and they have a "flare style" compression fitting, you can try taking the fitting the hose attaches to off of the handle and check the end, try cleaning it with emery paper, also look inside the fitting attached to the hose and make sure there is no debris preventing a good seal. Other than that tighten it up as tight as you can, I had to snug mine up pretty good.

What is the difference, Lee? Pipe thread seals on the threads and compression fittings seal where the two smooth tapered surfaces meet.

Okay, thanks, that makes more sense then why I couldn't get it to stop leaking.

@msali I recommend the orca torch, it is affordable, and will be capable of most silversmithing tasks. I can easily use it to make heavier gauge cuff bracelets. A good place to start out, a step above just a mini butane torch.
