So, first, thanks! I have a Lortone LU6X that's going unused. I bought it thinking it would be what I needed, but shortly after ended up with a nice 10 inch saw and 4 - 8 inch diamond whel unit. So, here are some pics. The question is, should I sell it as is (thinking $325) or totally refurb it and get $500? What do you all think? As is or refurb? I have $300 in it as is, and refurbing it will cost me another $140 for all the parts like cover, water jets, etc., things I don't need on it. That leaves me only a little for my labor. Thanks Again. Here are the pics. Oh... has a brand new Gold blade on it. I only made one cut on some turquoise just to make sure everything worked.

Thanks.
Doesn't need bearings. Runs like a charm! Just looks it's age I guess.
I could paint it, but then When I buy something used, I prefer to see it's age so I know what's in the future and it's past. Was it abused, etc.. This wasn't abused, it was well kept up, but used a lot. I just cut thru a couple stones, some small, one the max that blade can handle, and it handled them all like a champ!
I've posted it with both options, They can buy as is, or pay lots more for me to refurb, paint, etc it to make it pretty.

i think if you want 350 you would paint it up and make it look new to get that kind of money

I have one on craigs list here, asking 350, it isn't repainted but has new saw blade and a hard diamond wheel instead of SiC

I usually refurb them before I sell them. Typically I will: Media blast the metal bits and either prime & paint, or powder coat. (I mask any labels) Replace nuts, bolts, washers, plastic water lines, or seals with new ones. Replace broken parts Add new SIC wheels, or use the existing diamond wheels if they are in decent shape. Clean and service all the other parts. Usually I end up spending $50-$70 (maybe up to $120 if I powder coat) and about 4 hours. I don't care about the time investment..it is "playing" to me I will usually get between 50% - 75% of the price of a "new" unit and I try to make sure I am at 25%-30% "all in" when I sell.

Phil
I can't wait to see what you get for the unit.
I'd love to see you get that much for the unit but $325 could be an unrealistic number.
I am no expert so just a very casual observation...appearances matter.
That unit looks like it is on its last leg; It does not seem to be well cared for; it's rusty; SC wheels are not in demand; the expandable may be used heavily, hard to tell in that photo. Despite what you put into this unit, I doubt you could get anything near $325 ...hope I'm wrong

Thanks all. If I get no takers with the option, I'll probably repaint etc and repost afterwards. First I'll give the folks who enjoy tinkering a chance at it. Forgot about craigslist, will go post there today..
Thanks!

It is a Lortone so rust is a given. For a Lortone though it is in good shape. The last one I did was very rusty and needed bearings. I sprayed it with several coats of hammered finish paint, installed a Chinese blade, new Lortone bearings, new belt, and threw in some SC belts. It had needle valves and a stub tubing already. I think I sold it for $425 or $375 but no where near $500. Unless you like to tinker I would clean it as well as possible and sell it as is.

These are great little machines. Replacing the silicone carbide wheel with diamond is biggest improvement that can be made. I really do not think the cover for the saw is needed at all. I just have a splash shield on the front and nothing around it seems to ever get wet. I think the cover would just be a pain. A little elbow grease and 2 cans of spray paint can go a long way. I restored mine about 2 years ago and even with a ton of use it still looks great today. I empty and dry out the water pan under the grinding wheels after each use so it will not rust again. I currently have mine set up as my preforming station so it has the saw and then an 80 grit diamond wheel and 120 grit diamond wheel. I think I only spent $20 on the gravity feed water system. Its just to brass drip valves and one fitting at the bottom of the water bottle. Here's my restore pics from when I was doing it. I probably could have got $400 to $425 if I would have sold it right after the restore. forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/thread/54828Chuck

Update: I cleaned it, threw on a coat of lortone blue paint, and it left for it's new home today along with about 16 6 inch belts I had lying around plus a new Covington Gold blade. Also threw in a $10 fountain pump and some tubing, and showed them how to use everything. $325 and everyone was happy! Locally, they are $755 new!

Sounds like a good deal for the new buyers. Those are great starter machines. Did you take any pictures after the new coat of paint?

no, then I used it to cut 20 pounds of turquoise and then remembered to take a pic. I could easily have sold 3 at that price and a couple people wanted on a waiting list in case the people ahead of them didn't buy.... after paint: after 20 pounds
