Went to the San Diego Mineral and Gem Society's BBQ and silent auction on Saturday. Managed to spend only $20 on rocks (like I needed more, lol). But there's always such cool rocks there!
1. This first stuff I picked up from a vendor. Six bucks for all this. Quarter, fifty cents, a dollar, two dollars - my kind of prices. These were leftovers from an estate.
2. Manganese plumes maybe? 3. Don't know what this is, has some copper flakes in it (pic didn't capture it so well)
4. I like the dendrites on this one. The red is paint. ID'd as Parral Dendritic Agate from Mexico.
5. This one is pretty, had a partial label "...fied wood." Don't think it's any kind of wood, more like an agate of some kind.
6. Don't know this one, either. ID'd as Shrinkwood. 7. Dendrites in mustard. ID'd as Sagebrush Jasper from Wyoming.
8. Old leopardskin jasper
9. This was labeled "mixed rocks," I got it for four bucks (tray included!).
10a. Shrinkwood - This one alone is worth the price of admission.
10b.
11a. This was also in the tray. ID'd as Peanut Obsidian, cool!
11b.
12. Rutlilated Quartz ($7 for 4 pcs)
13. These were in a bag labeled "small slabs," dumped them out to take photo. Paid $2 for the entire bag.
14. Amethyst sage, gotta be worth the two bucks.
15. Cool looking, dontknowite.
16. Petrified wood? Has what looks like "yew" written on it.
17a. Picked up this chunk 'o sphere material for a friend (if he wants it). Sorry, didn't see any 4" chunks of native copper (but I looked!). Edit - @shotgunner, let me know what you think, I'll set it aside until I can get it to you. (I did get it with you in mind.) I think it is plasma agate? Could be wrong...
17b. Minimum dimension is five inches. My shipping scale is acting up, and my kitchen scale doesn't go high enough, but it's at least fifteen lbs.
17c.
17d.
17e.
17f. Will make a pretty sphere.
18. I told ya I won the amethyst cathedral in the raffle! This is about 15 inches tall.
19a. Went to the swap meet the next day, picked up this chunk of chapenite for a buck.
19b. Didn't post pics of all the rocks, but you get the idea. If you know any of the unidentified ones, feel free to let me know.
Thanks for looking. Jean

Peanut obsidian, huh? That would be cool. Okay, you can wipe your keyboard off now, lol. Next year I am sending you all my spare money! I can always sniff out the good deals! Sorry you have boring local rocks. Okay, you caught me. I did take a couple pics of the sphere machine, here's the best one. Will have to take a better one (with less clutter in the pic!) later.
The guy that donated it can make up to a 12" sphere (hmmm, really?) I understand the weight of a lager sphere tends to wear the motor bearings out, tho'. Should make smaller spheres just fine. Need to come up with a few parts.

Forgot to mention the five Montana moss agate I got for $6...

Wow, you got some bargains. I was in California a couple weeks ago fishing with friends and went to my first rock show in Yucaipa. Being new to this hobby I didn't want to overspend but still ended up with a few nice pieces, nothing like what you picked up. I regret not getting more when I was there and now I'm spending too much for slabs on e bay. Average price per slab that I bought tonight was about $15 each.

That leopard skin is really cool! Thanks! I have some newer material, but the older stuff is so much brighter.

Ouch, $15 a slab can deplete the rock fund quickly. I never pass up a good sale, where you can see and touch before purchase. I ALWAYS buy my slabs from club sales, shows and estate sales. Oh, and swap meets and thrift stores as well. I stay the heck away from eBay.

Would you be able to post the specs on the sphere machine motors (brand, model number, RPM, etc.)? Thanks!

Justin, I'm on it. Each motor has a paper tag, and while I can get some info off them, the part with the pertinent info (such as size, HP) are not readable. What I can tell you is that the motors are made/sold by Micronel US (small part of larger German company?) in either Fallbrook or Vista, CA (where the fires were a week ago!). They also say Robbins & Myers on them. Model HD PSO, Type V72 JM, 115 Volt, Single phase (no duh!), Rotation REV, Duty - Continuous, Amps is 6.7 (maybe?). Can't see an HP anywhere, nor RPM.
I'll look at them more closely tomorrow, see if I can find some info online for them. Also take more pics.

Pat, does that chunk of sphere material look like Plasma Agate to you? That's what I thought it was, but not sure.

You got me a sphere rock and bought yourself a sphere machine? WTH?? No, I bid on a sphere rock for someone else, and won it, Bob bought a sphere machine. I plan to stick with my original intentions. (Besides, I don't have a saw large enough to cut it.)

Jean it looks very similar to plasma in spots ... but something is "off" like too much solid green. Could be a lower grade matl.
Btw I'm not sure if plasma will make a good sphere or not ... It's hard to even cab it without major soft spots.

Thanks, Pat and Tommy. I'm not sure what it is, or if it is a good candidate for a sphere. Tommy is probably right... could be lower grade. It was not billed as plasma, I just thought it might be. But it was labeled as sphere material. Is there plasma agate from somewhere other than Clear Creek?
No matter, I didn't pay a lot for it.
Went rockhounding through my hoard today, I've got half a dozen rocks that would make good spheres, and not too big for my saw.
