I had a great time in California with my family. We found some cool rocks. My sister and I went to Afton Canyon But I didn't realize that my brother-in-laws truck didn't have 4x4 so we didn't go to far. the entrance down where I found out no 4x4, (who in the desert doesn't have 4x4, that's what I asked my sister Ha Ha Ha) the Bridge and where we stopped and my sister wouldn't go any farther. I'm glad we didn't risk it cause we were the only ones down in there, and no cell service. It was quite hard to turn around there. I was beautiful down where we were, she was as disappointed and me we couldn't go any farther maybe by next year he will have a 4x4 then we can drive trough there. my sis and Brother-in-law took me to Lavic and we all were pretty excited to find the jasper just laying there for us to pick up. we found mostly small stuf but it was still awesome Pigaugh crater The same day we also went to Mule Canyon and found some nice agate there and other things I didn't take pictures there.. and also went to Miniola Rd. one day too.. well here are the rock pictures. I had gotton so excited at different places I forgot to take lots of pictures Ha Ha Ha. the pile, sent five boxes home Found this one in Mule canyon I am not sure what it is but it was so cool (NEED ID ON IT PLEASE) I was shocked to find these in Mule Canyon too. Dry sort of Wet And the very small stuff mostly from Lavic and Mule Canyon I like the insect nodules from Mule Canyon. My sister liked to pick up the tiny stuff especially if it had druzy on it. my sister found this at Lavic looks like its a shell to me Also my Brother gave me this one it's small but real cool.. It has little gold flecks all over it. I hope everyone enjoys the trip as much as I did

cool trip and finds! the pic of the water crossing brings back fond memories. One trip there I had a friend along in my old Mitsubishi Montero and we stopped and surveyed it before going through. The water didn't appear to be too deep and we could see where someone had crossed recently, so I put in 4 high and eased in. All of a sudden the frontend dropped and water came up over the hood and my friend was trying to crawl out the window!!! as soon as the rearend came off the bank it leveled out and wasn't bad at all and we made it across without incedent.

Your pics bring back lots of old memories. Wish I still had it in me to take one last trip out there.
The piece your brother gave you is most likely pyrite. But just for kicks, try pushing a pin into one of the golden spots. If the pin goes in or leaves a scratch, tell your brother to get back out to where he found it and load all he can into his truck. Maybe several trips.

I used to make that crossing all the time in a 2 wheel drive van years ago. I especially liked to drive through there when jeep clubs were posing in the crossing for pictures. The last time I drove through there was in a 2 wheel drive Dodge pick up. Looked the same as always but we hit the big drop off and water was about half way up the truck. Something hit the fan (literally) and the blades ground through the radiator. We were camped in a 26' travel trailer up at the group camp area. I found some kind soul that had a phone that worked and called Auto Club. I had to pay for a second wrecker to pull the trailer out. Expensive day. Best to walk the crossing and check conditions. People drive through, getting stuck, and dig out a big hole trying to get out. Had that happen in a Nissan truck once too. Had to be pulled out by someone with a real truck. Beautiful area and nice place to camp too. Never found much in the way of rocks in the canyon though.

If a pin will go in to or scratch the gold areas easily, there's a good chance it's gold. If a pin won't scratch it, it's most likely pyrite.
