Deer Lodge WILL NOT RETURN HERE This location was not hard to find but it was a little confusing as to where you could go and where you couldn't. There were signs for trespass, but the directions in the book made it seem like you drove through and the site was past the initial forbidden area. As it turns out this is all private property and they don’t want people in there. I pulled up into the middle of a ghost town and parked. I took a few pics and was interrupted by a black cowboy. He informed me that the whole area was private property and that he was well aware of the book and had had people actually try to tell him that they were allowed on the land because it was in the book. It turns out that when the book was written, it was private and posted. Apparently the authors never had permission to be there. I talked to him for a while and he said that I could go and take a look. He cautioned me not to lick the rocks because there was arsenic in the ore. I went around the area he suggested and found the first real malachite I have ever found. It was really low grade and I tossed it over the hill because it was so poor. All in all I found very little of value and that which I did find was tossed out due to the arsenic. This location is a dead spot and should not be considered for future trips.

No, I am not a big gold guy. Unless it is stupidly easy and fast, I have no interest in gold.
