I took a nice ride 100 miles out of Phoenix to place called Dewey. Famous for an onyx mine and the whole area as other kinds of mines. Copper, gold, silver ect… I actually stopped in little mining museum in Humbolt-Dewey. History goes way back to the 1860’s. Anyway I digress. In this short trip I did some pretty interesting things. Like finding a glory hole! I saw the interesting area from the highway. Stop the Car! Right on 69 and took a stroll. I think it was legal where I was hounding? Pretty sure it was County road egress. But I was dangerously parked. Sort of. I had my hazard lights on. Well back to the stroll. I noticed this nicely colored bright yellow Quartz. Which really fascinated me. I easily kicked it out of the dirt with my shoe. But then I saw something else. So with other rocks I started to dig and this pretty lavender agate(maybe) popped up. But wait! There more! A big chunk of black and white banded onyx was revealing itself. I dug and I dug w/ rocks. I tried leveraging. But to no avail! Do I leaverite or do I go back to the car and get tools? Get tools! I could kick myself for not having my rock-hounding bag. Leave it the car ED! So all I ended up with was a screwdriver and pair of my Pop’s heavy-duty pliers for a hammer. Well that onyx released itself easily Its big 7lb chunk! That little area is rock-hounders stroll. Lots of onyx, fine looking quartz, and other good stuffs. I would have gotten more but I wasn’t parked very wisely and I’m not sure I was on allowable land. Dangerous. Some days are just like that. Ed

There are some curious green crystal embedded in this onyx I’ll have to see if I can’t free them with a dremel. Maybe they are garnets? Pure olivine peridot ? Maybe emerald? Ha ! Any ideas? Thanks everyone !!
