Hello. This has probably been addressed but I haven't been able to find it in a search. Please forgive me if I'm being redundant.
I am new to rockhounding and am hoping to go to Arizona in October to look for rocks. Given that I'm from out of state and don't know where to start, does anybody have any recommendations on where I shd go? I haven't planned the trip so I haven't even settled on where in the state I'll be going--that is wide open. Things I wd be most interested in wd be: petrified wood, quartz crystals (or any kind of crystal), malachite, fire agate, fluorite.
Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Jeanette

Welcome aboard Jeanette.
Rock hounding in Arizona ? Are you kidding ? Just pull off the road and walk up any dry wash. You're sure to find something worth bringing home. Just watch out for rattle snakes, scorpions and a few other critters.
This South Dakota guy can't give you any exact locations, but we have a bunch of Arizona members who will. A few may even offer to take you out hounding at one of their secret locations.
A google search for rock hounding locations in Arizona should turn up tons of leads too.

We did the AZ trip last summer. We stayed in Sedona and made day trips to local tourist locations along with rockhounding areas. Make sure you go to the Petrified Forest National Monument. Be sure to leave any rock you have collected back at the hotel or camp before entering the park. I made the mistake of having rocks with me. The Ranger and I stapled about 15 bags closed. I had picked up the Gem Trails of Arizona book. It was very helpful. There are a few places to collect pet wood near the Pet Forest. Have fun. Watch out for monsoon season.

Your coming at good time to hound up north should be below the snow time and cooler in the more southern parts
you'll get a lot responses and there is plenty of time best Ed
I'll be monitoring this thread for info myself!

Thanks for the advice. I just ordered Gem Trails myself a few hours ago. I'm glad to hear it's useful. The internet has been surprisingly unhelpful--there's a bit about the wonderful gems and minerals you can get, but not much on WHERE. I found a lot more for Montana, but unfortunately, it'll be a little too cold to camp in Montana for my Florida blood!

Around Kingman is a good area. They have fire agate, turquoise and meteorites in the area.
