The wife and I are heading to Mercer, WI for the weekend. I would like to day trip to Lake Superior to hunt for agates. We have been to little girls point before but are not really familiar with the area up there. Any good spots to hunt agates? I have read Copper Harbor is fantastic for hunting but it's a 3 1/2 hour trip one way. Thanks!!

Sorry I don't have any particular spots near you. Best bet is the gravel pits. Most are closed to the public but if you can find a town owned pit near Mercer or better yet, further north, then you may find some. I have been to a few beaches near Ashland, Superior, Duluth and have only found little chips. Further up the U.P. as you mentioned would be better hunting but then travel times are to be considered. Also, look for old railroad beds and those that are now ATV trails. The ATV trails are where I have had the best luck. Spend some time on Google Earth looking near Mercer. And…take photos and share a bit of your trip.

Beautiful pictures. I like the bear tracks.
I've tried sitting in one spot digging for rocks, but I don't have the patience for that. I prefer to wade and look in the water. With ice still floating, I might feel differently though. You should have taken wet pictures. Whenever I get my rocks home and they've dried out, I wonder why I picked them up. I wet them down to remember. Be sure to post pictures when you get those tumbled, I'd love to see them.
